Boarding School
Prince William went to boarding school at the age of 8, and though his mother, Princess Diana, was reluctant to send him, his father, Prince Charles, wanted to continue the family tradition of boarding school attendance. William was reportedly lonely and homesick, but his mother often wrote letters to him.
Fractured Skull
When the prince was still 8 years old, he was hit by a golf club at school and suffered a skull fracture that required a 70-minute surgery, but his mother was by his side the entire time. The surgery went smoothly and William was only left with a scar, which he refers to as his “Harry Potter scar.”
Heir To The Throne
Before Prince William started school, he had no idea he was heir to the throne, and his brother reportedly broke the news to him. Royal expert Andrew Morton wrote, “William said once that he would like to be a policeman and look after his mother, Harry told him emphatically: 'You can't, you have to be King.”
Family Drama
In a 1995 interview with BBC, Princess Diana admitted to having an affair after revealing Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. When the teenage Prince William watched the interview, he felt so betrayed and angered that he wouldn’t even speak to his mother when she called him.
Parents’ Divorce
The relationship between Princess Diana and Prince Charles later became so strained that Queen Elizabeth II wrote letters to the couple, ordering them to divorce. Even with the queen's help, the divorce was so bitter that William was traumatized and emotionally affected for years.
