Cultural Expectations
Melania Trump has gone to great lengths to adhere to dress expectations, but she did not consider Saudi Arabia's cultural dress code. Women in Saudi Arabia "are expected to wear loose black robes called abayas," according to Allure, as the country's culture expects women to dress conservatively.
Pricy Jacket
During the G7 Summit in Sicily in 2017, Trump shocked the world with her choice of jacket, a floral embroidered look from designer Dolce & Gabbana that cost $51,500. To put the price in perspective, a high school teacher in the US has an average yearly salary of $60,320.
Africa’s Outfit
Few of Trump’s appearances were as controversial as her colonial-indicative outfit choice while on a trip to Africa. On a safari tour in Kenya, she wore a white pith helmet, and she was either completely unaware of the historical implications, or didn't see her choices as a big deal.
Zara Jacket
While traveling to McAllen, Texas, in June 2018, the first lady opted for an army green jacket from Zara that had "I really don't care. Do U?" written on the back. The backlash got so intense that her spokesperson, Stephanie Grisham, jumped onto the scene to clarify, saying, "It's a jacket. There was no hidden message."
Pink Blouse
Trump appeared in a bright pink pussy-bow blouse during a 2016 debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Social media users pointed to the correlation between Trump's choice and the words her husband used to describe his sexual advance tactics.
