Johnny Depp has portrayed a variety of strange and sometimes horrific characters, but you're unlikely to see him confront his greatest fear on screen. Depp has said that he is terrified of a rather common figure — and he isn't alone in his phobia.
Depp is apparently terrified of clowns, a fear known as coulrophobia. "Something about the painted face, the fake smile," Depp explained his reasoning in an interview, adding, "There always seemed to be a darkness lurking just under the surface, a potential for real evil."
Many people are afraid of clowns thanks to infamous serial killer John Wayne Gacy, who worked as a clown for children's parties, as well as many on-screen depictions of terrifying clowns. Coulrophobia affects not only Depp, but also fellow celebs Daniel Radcliffe and P Diddy.
