Who Are Devon's Real Parents On The Young And The Restless?

Bryton James first appeared on the "Young and the Restless" in 2004 as troubled teenager Devon Hamilton, and has remained in the role off-and-on ever since. Over the years James has also pursued acting roles outside of daytime television and has been cast in many TV series including "The Vampire Diaries," "Hero Factory," "Winx Club," and "The Rich and the Ruthless," among others. Over the years he received seven Daytime Emmy nominations for his portrayal of Devon and took home the award for Outstanding Younger Actor in 2007.

Devon Hamilton was first introduced to the soap when he was approached and befriended by Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) while she was volunteering for Victor Newman's Community Service project. Devon judged Lily as a spoiled rich kid at first and lied to her about his own upbringing, before eventually coming clean. Devon admitted that his mother suffered from drug abuse and that he was raised by his grandmother until she died, and was then placed in foster care.

Lily's mother Drucilla Winters (Victoria Rowell) got to know him and bonded with young Devon over her own time as a runaway teen. Dru made the decision to foster Devon, despite her husband Neil's (Kristoff St. John) misgivings. Under the Winters roof Devon was able to focus on his education and learn about a lifestyle that had never before been available to him. However, not everything was smooth sailing and over the years Devon has dealt with much turmoil regarding his parents — both adoptive and biological.

Devon Hamilton was taken in by the Winters family

The Winters family was extremely supportive of Devon and understanding of his circumstances, especially his complicated relationship with his biological mother. At one point they even let her stay in their home for a period of time when she was suffering from homelessness (via Soap Central). Later, when Devon survived a serious case of meningitis and became deaf, the Winters all learned sign language and adapted their home in an effort to support him.

Unfortunately, just three short years after Devon first met the Winters family, Drucilla was involved in a tragic accident. While trying to referee an argument between Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) and Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) at an outdoor photoshoot, Dru lost her footing and she fell off a cliff. Her body was never found and she was presumed dead. Her family was devastated and Devon took the time at her memorial to speak about how kind she had been to him and how she had encouraged him to believe in himself.

Despite their rocky start, Devon became close with his adoptive father Neil. They eventually became business partners at The Hamilton-Winters Group and Neil even encouraged Devon to get to know his biological father when his identity was discovered. The two men hit a rocky patch when Devon had an affair with Neil's new wife Hilary Curtis (Mishael Morgan) and then later married her himself, but they had reconciled by 2018 when a pregnant Hilary died as a result of a car accident. Tragically, just a few months later the father and son were separated forever when Neil passed away in his sleep from a stroke.

Devon Hamilton had a rocky relationship with his biological mother

Devon's biological mother Yolanda Hamilton (Chene Lawson, Debbi Morgan) was ever-present in his life, even when they weren't together. Devon cared deeply about his mother despite her faults and her inability to care for him as a child. Yolanda suffered from drug abuse that often left her in dangerous situations and Devon did his best to support her when he could.

Eventually, Yolanda was able to get sober and changed her name to Harmony in honor of her fresh start (via Soap Central). However, the trust between mother and son was soon broken when a media story was released revealing the identity of Devon's biological father as local musician Tucker McCall (Stephen Nichols), which Harmony had kept secret from him.

Devon and Harmony managed to reconcile after some time had passed and he even gave her his blessing to date his adoptive father Neil for a period of time. In 2012, Harmony announced that she was moving away to be with her daughter, Devon's half-sister, who needed her support. She left on good terms with Devon, Neil, and the rest of the friends she had made in Genoa City, and hasn't appeared on screen since.

Tucker McCall eventually made peace with his son Devon

When the news broke that Tucker McCall was Devon's biological father Devon was understandably upset, not only because he had never known the truth, but also because he had recently worked for Tucker as a record producer and had just been fired by him (via Soap Central). Despite those less-than-ideal circumstances Tucker seemed eager to get to know his son and Devon eventually gave him a chance at Neil's urging, and they bonded over music. Later, Devon even accepted help from Tucker during the process of getting a cochlear implant.

Eventually, it was discovered that Tucker had been involved in shady business dealings involving Newman Enterprises after Victor Newman was presumed dead — which Tucker knew wasn't true. Devon disowned his father, along with Tucker's own mother Kay Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper), who cut him out of her will and announced that her substantial estate would now go to Devon. In 2013, Tucker announced he was moving to Hong Kong and hasn't been seen in Genoa City since.

Tucker reappeared briefly in 2019 when Devon tracked him down in an ashram in Thailand, seeking answers about an allegation that Tucker had altered his mother's will years earlier (via Soaps in Depth). Devon seemed to soften toward his father when he explained that he was on a "spiritual journey" and had given up all material possessions. Tucker told the truth about not being involved in tampering with the will and the two seemed to make peace. Who knows, maybe Harmony or Tucker will return to Genoa City someday? But for now, maybe Devon's better off without their influences.
