How Many Times Have Sonny And Carly Been Married On General Hospital?

The forever on-and-off spouses of "General Hospital" are off again, as Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) and Sonny Corinthos (who has been played by Maurice Benard from the start) signed divorce papers in February 2022 (via Soap Hub), which is what this longtime pair tends to do.

When they break up, even the fans who hope for it to be permanent know that it will never last, and Sonny and Carly will wed again at some point. They've been down this road enough to know what to expect.

Sonny and Carly have had quickie weddings under duress, hospital weddings, and intimate vow renewals in their living room, as this pair just loves getting married — and divorced.

Sonny and Carly's first marriage was in 2000, and they've spent two decades breaking up just to make up (via Soaps In Depth), frequently marrying or becoming engaged to others while they take hiatuses from one another.

However, the question remains whether their latest breakup might have been the last. Here's how many times Carly and Sonny have been married on "General Hospital."

Carly married Sonny to help save him

An impulsive one-night stand more than 20 years ago is how Carly Benson — then played by Sarah Joy Brown (pictured above) — and Sonny Corinthos first got together on "General Hospital."

In typical soap opera fashion, Carly became pregnant and tried to pass the baby off as AJ Quartermaine's (Billy Warlock), the biological father of her first son, Michael, and also the man she was married to at the time. When Carly took a tumble down the Quartermaine stairs, she lost the baby and bonded with Sonny over their grief (via Soaps In Depth).

While Sonny and Carly got close, they weren't quite in love — or, at least, they didn't admit it to themselves or each other. However, they did get married, but it was only so that Carly wouldn't have to testify against Sonny about crimes she knew the mob kingpin had committed.

But, they genuinely fell in love and renewed their vows the next year in a romantic ceremony in Martinique (via Soap Opera Digest).

They broke up and made up again

When Carly tried to get Sonny to leave the mob and worked with the authorities behind his back to make that happen, Sonny was furious and slept with his lawyer, Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn). Nine months later, she gave birth to his daughter, Kristina Corinthos (via Soaps In Depth).

After Carly was presumed dead and then crashed her own funeral, she and Sonny made up and decided to marry again, so they traveled back to their favorite spot in Martinique and took vows again (via Soap Opera Digest).

Carly, now played by Tamara Braun (pictured above), got pregnant again; this time, the married couple looked forward to having a baby together while also raising Michael.

But mob ties got in the way again, and Sonny accidentally shot Carly in the head while she was in labor in a remote cabin. He delivered their son, Morgan, but Carly fell into a coma. When she woke, she was fed up with Sonny and divorced him (via Soaps In Depth).

Sonny and Carly married under duress again

Several years passed with Sonny and Carly becoming involved with others. In fact, Carly fell very much in love with Jasper "Jax" Jacks (Ingo Rademacher) and wanted to marry him.

Then, she saw Sonny shoot Lorenzo Alcazar (Ted King), and he once again convinced her to marry him so she once again wouldn't have to testify against him (via Soaps In Depth). So, that was their third official marriage but the fourth time the pair took vows.

Although Carly — now played by Laura Wright (pictured above) — and Sonny admitted they still loved one another, Carly wanted a safer life, so she divorced him and married Jax, soon giving birth to his daughter, Josslyn.

However, the marriage to Jax didn't work out, and they divorced. In 2014, Carly was set to wed Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth), but he learned about a romp she had with Sonny a few weeks before the wedding and exposed the affair at the altar, leaving Carly humiliated (via Soaps In Depth).

They took vows again — and again

By 2015, Sonny and Carly had to admit they were still in love and planned a small ceremony at home, but Sonny's mob life got in the way again, and he was shot.

When the doctors gave him the all-clear, Carly arranged for them to have a wedding in the hospital chapel. But, a year later, their now-grown son, Morgan Corinthos (Bryan Craig), was killed in a car explosion, and Carly blamed Sonny's criminal lifestyle (via Soaps In Depth).

She filed for divorce but later walked in on Sonny sleeping with her divorce lawyer and fired her (via YouTube). Eventually, the pair forgave each other for their indiscretions and tossed the divorce papers.

While Carly was pregnant with yet another child, Donna, they renewed their vows again, according to TV Insider. It looked like smooth sailing for Sonny and Carly, but this is a soap opera, so smooth sailing rarely lasts long.

It was divorce time again for Sonny and Carly

Too bad Sonny fell off a bridge in New Jersey, according to Soaps.com, and eventually washed up on the shore of a Pennsylvania river with amnesia. He spent much of 2020 living in a town called Nixon Falls and falling for Carly's enemy, Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros), who knew who he was but kept it a secret while his family thought he had died (via Soaps In Depth).

By the time Sonny got his memory back and returned to Port Charles, he found Carly had just married his best friend, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), whom she was dating when she first slept with Sonny back in 2000.

Jason and Carly admitted they had always only loved each other and were ready to share a wedding night in Sonny's bedroom when he walked in and revealed he was still alive (via Soaps.com). Jason and Carly realized their marriage wasn't valid and called it quits.

So, Sonny and Carly tried to resume their life together. But, when Carly learned that Nina knew Sonny was alive for months and that Sonny had fallen for her while he was away, Carly moved out.

Sonny begged for her to return to him, and, when he thought she wasn't going to show up for a date, he slept with Nina, Carly walked in on the moment (via Soap Hub), and it was divorce once again for Sonny and Carly Corinthos in 2022.
