The Truth About Tamron Hall's Marriage
Though Tamron Hall is up for talking just about anything on the "Tamron Hall Show," there's always been one thing that's not up for discussion: her marriage with music executive and film producer Steven Greener.
Greener has made himself a big name in show business over the years. He began his career managing Will Smith during his time on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Today, he helps manage musicians like Cee Lo Green, Brandy, and Eric Benét at Primary Wave. He's produced a few movies that fans may have seen, too, like "Guess Who" starring Ashton Kutcher and "Mr. 3000" with Bernie Mac.
While Greener may be familiar with the world of entertainment, his face is not a very familiar one for Hall's fans — a group she lovingly refers to her as her "Tam Fam." In fact, Hall has only posted a handful of photos of him throughout the years. "For him, he wants my show to make it, but he wants our marriage to work," Hall once explained to Good Housekeeping. "And he knows part of that is maintaining this foundation and him being comfortable with who he is and not pushed into someone he isn't." It turns out, he isn't somebody who likes to take up too much of the spotlight. Read on to find out more about Hall's low-profile marriage to the music executive.
Tamron Hall's husband tried to ask her out for years
It wasn't love at first sight for Tamron Hall when she laid eyes on Steven Greener — but it certainly seemed to be for her soon-to-be-husband. The two had been friends for four years before they began dating, and Greener always seemed to show up whenever she was out and would attempt to strike up a heart-to-heart. "My husband had approached me and had conversations, and I didn't realize he was asking me out for a date," the talk show host later admitted during an interview with Parade.
Hall simply thought that Greener had completely different intentions. "My husband is in music management, so I thought he was trying to represent me," she explained on "Live with Kelly and Ryan." "And I'm like, 'I can't sing.'"
However, we all know now that her heart did eventually start to sing for the music executive.
They started dating shortly after Tamron Hall left the Today show
In 2017, Tamron Hall and Steven Greener reconnected at a pool in Los Angeles when he asked her out for pizza (per Good Housekeeping). "We started talking, and it just came at the perfect time in my life," she told Parade.
His arrival came during one of the most difficult times in her life, too. Earlier that year, it was announced that Hall had officially left her post on NBC's "Today" show. Yet, as difficult as it was for her to walk away from her dream job, she would have never found her dream man if she had never stepped foot outside of 30 Rockefeller Center. "When I was working, given the competitive environment I was in, you don't always see people for who they are. Once I left, I started to have better conversations," she later told People. "You're more present, and you're not looking at your phone, not checking your email. The fear factor of 'What's going on with my spot? Am I going to keep this job?' fell away, and I could really see Steven."
The two moved in together after only three weeks
After Tamron Hall and Steven Greener's first date, the two fell fast and hard for each other. In fact, they decided to move in together only three weeks later.
While they may have been prepared for this massive step in their relationship, it turns out, Hall's mother did not approve of the decision — so Hall decided not to tell her about it. "My mother is Southern, old school, so I kept saying he was visiting," Hall admitted on "Live with Kelly and Ryan."
Crazily enough, when Hall's mother first came to visit her famous daughter, Hall had Greener move all of his clothing out and sleep over at one of his friend's houses for a few days. "It was like a comedy special," Hall said. "And my mother said later she always knew." After all, a mother's intuition never fails!
Tamron Hall and Steven Greener got married in their home
Not many people know exactly what Tamron Hall and Steven Greener's wedding ceremony was like — and they like to keep it that way. Yet, there are a few details that the talk show host has let slip over the years.
In 2019, Hall revealed on the "Tamron Hall Show" that she and her husband had tied the knot inside their home that same year. "It's proof you can keep things private," she later laughed during an interview with Good Housekeeping.
Yet, neither one of them seemed to know at the time that their private home life was about to get much more public. A year later, the two were forced to shoot her talk show within the walls of their own home amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. "My husband has been an enormous help," she told People at the time. "Even though he's also working from home, he does our camera work and wrangles our bird. Yes, we have a bird — her name is Josephine Birdker, Jojo for short."
They had a top secret pregnancy
Only a few weeks after tying the knot in 2019, Tamron Hall and Steven Greener shocked Instagram with another big announcement: They were expecting a baby together.
It wasn't an easy journey for them, either. Hall had been through fertility treatments for decades of her life before receiving pregnancy news from her nurse at age 48. "We'd gone through the last round of IVF [in vitro fertilization], and when I got the call from the nurse that we were [pregnant], it was unbelievable, surreal," Hall told Parade. Though Hall was over the moon to be expecting, she was still afraid to share her secret with the world. "I was terrified I would lose this baby and I would have to go back and tell everyone that now it was bad news, and after this pregnancy had gone so far," the talk show host told People.
Due to her high-risk pregnancy, Hall and Greener decided to announce their news online when she reached 32 weeks. Of course, it consisted of a video of her singing "Baby Shark." In April 2019, the two welcomed their son Moses into the world.
Here's why their relationship has been so private
Though Tamron Hall describes her husband as her "deepest, greatest love," she's always been hesitant to talk about him on TV — and there's an important reason why. "I always thought, 'One day I'll get married, and I don't want my husband to have to look at old episodes of me gushing over the last guy,'" she explained to People. "So I've always been very cautious."
Hall has explained to Good Housekeeping that her relationship with Steven Greener is very similar to what Dolly Parton and her husband Carl Dean have, as we always seem to hear about the country superstar and not much about the man who supports her quietly behind the scenes.
Keeping Greener completely hidden has never been their intention, though. "People say he's my 'secret husband.' But we were going everywhere together," Hall told People. Still, she won't be sharing the details of their relationship anytime soon. "It was just a private thing I needed to protect," she added.
This is the secret to their lasting marriage
From their religions to their favorite sports teams, there have been a lot of differences that Tamron Hall and Steven Greener have had to put aside over all these years. "We're an interracial couple, we're both older parents, he's from the Bronx, I'm from Texas, that alone is a divide," she said during an interview with Good Housekeeping.
Disagreements, unfortunately, are an inevitable part of any relationship. Yet, this is exactly what inspired Hall and Greener to make a very important promise to one another during their first trip together. They swore that they would "never turn on each other" and that they would "always be on each other's side" despite all the obstacles they had in their way.
Today, these two really do seem to have it all figured out. "My story is not one I could've ever expected. I never thought I'd have to lose everything to gain even more," Hall told People. "But I lost my spot and I gained a husband who roots for me, a beautiful baby boy who looks at me like I'm his entire world."
