Here's What Will Smith's Mom Has To Say About The Oscars Incident
Fans are still talking about the drama between Will Smith and Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. If you haven't heard, Rock appeared to present the award for best documentary when he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head (via TMZ). Will Smith and Jada were sitting just a few feet away from Rock, and the camera panned over to the couple to show that Jada didn't appear amused by the comment. Rock continued his presentation, but moments later, Smith was seen heading onto the stage to approach the comedian. Smith then slapped Rock hard across the face, leaving attendees and viewers stunned.
"Wow, Will Smith just smacked the s**t outta me," Rock said after the incident. Smith immediately went back to his seat, but the altercation wasn't over. After sitting down, Smith yelled, "Keep my wife's name out your f***ing mouth" two times before Rock composed himself and handed out the award. The confrontation came after Jada has opened up about her hair loss over the last few years.
Later in the night, Will won an Oscar for his role in the film "King Richard," and was moved to tears during his acceptance speech, apologizing to his fellow nominees and to the academy (via Page Six). Since the show, Smith has issued a public apology, and Rock declined to press charges against the actor (via CNN).
Now, Smith's mother is speaking out about the incident.
Carolyn Smith is a proud mother after Will's headline-making night
While everyone's wondering whether the Academy will take back Will Smith's Oscar, his mother, Carolyn Smith, has some thoughts on everything that happened with her son during Sunday night's Academy Awards. Carolyn revealed to 6 ABC that she couldn't be more proud of her son for taking home the Oscar for best actor. "I know how he works, how hard he works... I've been waiting and waiting and waiting. When I heard the name, I was just, 'Yes!'" The proud mother said.
However, the actor's big moment was overshadowed by his outburst against Chris Rock earlier in the show, per Philly Voice. Carolyn told 6 ABC that she was completely shocked by her son's behavior as she's never seen him be violent in that way. "He is a very even, people person. That's the first time I've ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime... I've never seen him do that," she confessed. The actor's sister, Ellen Smith, also revealed that her brother has always seemed to flourish despite the high demands and extreme pressure of being in the spotlight.
Meanwhile, Will's mother isn't letting anything bring down the positivity of her son's big win. "I am proud of him being him," she simply said of the incident. It appears that the "King Richard" star has the support of his family following his altercation with Rock, which is likely a comfort to the actor.
