Justin Bieber's Tattoos: A Complete Guide
In the past, body art was generally associated with musicians of specific genres, but mainstream singers these days don't shy away from getting inked. While some tatted-up hitmakers opt for minimalism and have one or two tattoos, others are seemingly addicted to the art form and don't hesitate to draw all over their bodies. Body art plays a huge role in the brands of stars such as Adam Levine, Zayn Malik, and Travis Barker. Likewise, when it comes to Canadian singer Justin Bieber.
He is not only famous for his singing skills and good looks; fans also admire his vast collection of tattoos. According to Body Art Guru, the "Baby" crooner has more than 60 tatts, and many of them mean something. Bieber has covered his torso, arms, back, legs, and neck in ink. There is one part of his body that he prefers to keep ink-free. "I promised myself I didn't want to get tattoos on my hands and so I don't think I'm going to get tattoos on my hands," he revealed last year during an interview on Sirius XM.
Read on to learn more about Bieber's tattoos and the meanings behind them.
Justin Bieber's first tattoo of many is on his torso
Justin Bieber covered his torso in tattoos; that includes the very first one he ever got. His first is a seagull on his hip, which he got at 16. It was inspired by Richard Bach's novel, "Johnathan Livingston Seagull" (via Capital FM). Other tattoos include the word "Purpose" above his navel; this is the name of his 2015 album. He also has his mother's birth year — 1975 — inked on the left side of his collar bone. Bieber got a small crown on his chest back in 2012. Some fans believe it was a tribute to Michael Jackson.
The singer has a large eagle tattooed in the center of his stomach. To showcase his devotion to Christianity, he placed several religious symbols on his body. These are predominately on his chest and stomach and include the phrase "Son of God," two angels on either side of his torso, a large cathedral, and skeletons that represent a battle between good and evil.
He has a huge cross inked in the middle of his chest and the phrase "Yeshua," the Hebrew name for Jesus, on his ribs (via Body Art Guru). Other body art on his torso includes a lion on the top left side of his chest and a bear on the right side, the word "Forgive" on his waist, and a small Chinese tattoo on his chest meaning "follow heart."
Justin Bieber honored his grandfather with a tattoo on his back
Back in 2014, Justin Bieber placed the word "Patience" on his back. While fans have speculated over the years, no one is sure what this tattoo means to the singer (via Capital FM). He once again showed off his religious devotion by getting a Bible verse on his back. It reads: "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." Other ink includes the symbol for the junior ice hockey team, the Stratford Cullitons. This one honors his grandfather because they used to go watch the team together. Bieber showed his dedication to music by getting a treble clef on the back of his neck. There are also two large angel wings there.
The Grammy winner has a rose and a laurel on the front of his neck. "The rose on my neck from Dr. Woo reminds me that even though I'm flawed, beauty shines even through our rough edges," he told Vogue. He also has a peach on the side of his neck, which was inked in celebration of the third single of his album "Justice," according to Page Six.
Other tattoos on the left side of his neck include the word "Forever" and bird flying right above it.
Justin Bieber has a massive eagle on his left arm
Justin Bieber has seven tattoos on his left arm. According to Capital FM, the most prominent piece is an eagle, which starts on his shoulder and extends down his arm. His second-most conspicuous arm tattoo is a tiger from 2013. The singer also has an eye carved onto his left arm that — according to the publication — is in tribute to his mother Pattie Mallette. The eye represents "her watching over him." A tattoo reading "Believe" was placed right below the eye; Bieber also has an owl, castle, and prince in the area.
The most controversial art on his left arm is a portrait of his ex-girlfriend, Selena Gomez. He got this particular piece in 2013 when in the midst of an on-again, off-again relationship with the "Monte Carlo" actress. Speaking to GQ, Bieber revealed that he tried to cover it up at some point. "This [portrait is of] my ex-girlfriend, I kinda tried to cover her face up with some shading, but people still know."
Justin Bieber has the letter 'G' on his right arm
The "Intentions" singer has a total of 13 tattoos on his right arm. In 2012, Justin Bieber added a Japanese Kanji character to his impressive collection (via J-14). Two years later, he got the word "Trust" and a boombox inked there, too. In July 2015, he added the letter "G" to his sleeve. According to Capital FM, this was Bieber's way of honoring a child named Georgia — the daughter of his friends Chad and Julia Veach — who suffered from lissencephaly.
He posted a picture of the special tattoo on Instagram. "This is for the strongest couple i know Chad and Julia Veach," Bieber captioned the pic. "Their daughter was born with Lissencephaly. She is incredible and has the sweetest soul. You guys make me better and I'm blessed to have you in my life." Other tattoos on his right arm include a jester, a chi symbol, a Korean mask, fish scales representing his zodiac sign of Pisces, a ghost character from the video game Super Mario Brothers, an eight ball, a compass, an angel, a rose, and a clock tattoo.
The singer even paid tribute to English artist Banksy by getting his artwork "Balloon Girl" tattooed onto his right arm (via Capital FM).
Justin Bieber has an inspirational reminder tattooed on his leg
In 2012, Justin Bieber once again showed his devotion to his faith by getting a depiction of Jesus Christ inked onto the back of his right calf (via Page Six). The same year he added another religious tattoo to his right leg. This one is of praying hands and a rose, and it was placed underneath the portrait of Jesus.
The Canadian singer placed the phrase "Better At 70" on the front part of his leg. According to an Instagram, he got this particular piece of art in 2017 to acknowledge the ups and downs of his life and his journey towards betterment. "I look back at a lot of things in my life, mistakes, insecurities, and although I have felt I've wasted a lot of time it also makes me want to be better faster," he wrote in a caption alongside a photo of the tattoo. "For me personally, I want to work everyday [sic] to be BETTER AT 70."
