Here's Who Might Become The 17th Person To Earn EGOT Status
Perhaps you've heard the term EGOT. But what does it actually mean? A person who has achieved this elite status is a rarity, with only 16 humans on Earth able to claim they have snagged an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Among the prestigious list of such incredible talent is the incomparable Audrey Hepburn, hilarious writer and actor Mel Brooks, who actually has multiple wins in each category, Rita Moreno, director Mike Nichols, the sometimes-controversial Whoopi Goldberg and singer John Legend (via EW).
Now, with this year's Oscar nominations a new possible EGOT has emerged. It may surprise absolutely no one that Lin-Manuel Miranda has already won an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony. Of course, the prolific songwriter already boasts Tony awards for his work on "In The Heights" and "Hamilton" (via Fox News). His Emmy comes from producing the latter as a movie for Disney+ and as far as Grammys, well, the accomplished composer has been nominated six times and won three statues, with one being awarded for his work on "Moana."
Miranda stands to win an Oscar for Best Original Song for composing "Dos Oruguitas" for "Encanto, according to NBC News. As the outlet points out, the better-known tunes from the Disney animated film were not nominated, namely "We Don't Talk About Bruno." If you now have the ditty in your head (again), we apologize in advance!
EGOT status passed Lin-Manuel Miranda by previously
As fans will recall, this is not the first time the "Moana" composer has been nominated for an Oscar, having previously received a nod for his work on the beloved Disney classic.
Other nominees in the category this year include some equally big names. Beyoncé Knowles is nominated for her tune, "Be Alive" from the Will Smith vehicle, "King Richard" (via Billboard).
Meanwhile, Diane Warren is nominated for "Somehow You Do" from "Four Good Days." And Billie Eilish is nominated for "No Time to Die" from the James Bond film of the same name.
While it's unknown how likely it is that Miranda will snag the Oscar, officially becoming the 17th person to garner EGOT status, he is already feeling "grateful" for being recognized for "Encanto" as well as for another project helmed by the star prior to this awards season. Indeed, the film he directed "tick, tick...BOOM!" received several nominations, including for its star, Andrew Garfield, for Best Actor.
