Nancy Lee Grahn Reveals Who She Wants Her General Hospital Character To Date
"General Hospital's" Alexis Davis, played by Nancy Lee Grahn, certainly hasn't had much luck with love during the quarter of a century she's been living in the fictional upstate New York town of Port Charles. In fact, the last few years have been downright dreadful for her. In 2016, she was thrilled to marry mobster Julian Jerome, the man she shared a one-night stand with as a teen that gave her and Julian a daughter named Sam McCall.
Julian had told Alexis he left the mob, but through a series of unfortunate events, got sucked back in by his crazy sister, and to protect Alexis, he pretended he was going to kill her by holding a dagger to her neck — the same dagger that was used to kill her mother. At the time, neither Alexis nor the audience knew that Julian never meant to harm Alexis, but that was definitely the end of that marriage.
It took Alexis some time to emotionally detach herself from Julian and she did so with the help of a therapist, Neil Byrne, whom she fell for. When Alexis and Neil finally gave into their feelings despite the ethical issues, Alexis found Neil dead in her bed the next morning, according to Soaps In Depth. Needless to say, Alexis needs the right guy in her life who will not try to kill her or end up dead himself, and actress Nancy Lee Grahn thinks she has the perfect man for the character she's been playing since 1996.
Nancy Lee Grahn feels opposites might attract for Alexis Davis
Both Alexis Davis and Nancy Lee Grahn are independent women who have raised children on their own and often don't shy away from voicing their political views. In 2018, Alexis even ran for mayor of Port Charles as the more liberal candidate trying to save people's homes from a corporate developer. Her opponent was the more conservative Ned Quartermaine (via Hidden Remote). She also championed women when she defended Olivia Falconeri when she was arrested for breastfeeding in public (via Soaps.com).
While fans don't see scenes with Alexis posting her views on social media, anyone who follows Grahn knows she is not shy about saying just about anything she wants regarding the state of American politics and makes no secret that she is a diehard Democrat. As of this writing, she has been recently speaking out against voter suppression laws and the fact that congress was unable to pass any voting rights legislation thanks to Republicans and two Democrats blocking the bill.
"Every GOP Senator including Manchin & Sinema would be drowning in their shame if they had a conscience, but, alas. It will be the conscience of the majority of Americans who'll determine how this is going to end, & it will end. America will live or die by our right to vote," Grahn tweeted on January 19, 2022. However, that doesn't mean she wouldn't want to see Alexis match wits with someone on the opposite end of the political spectrum.
Nancy Lee Grahn wants Alexis to find herself a nice Republican
As Nancy Lee Grahn (above, with former co-star William deVry) celebrated 25 years of playing Alexis Davis, poor Alexis was at a crossroads in her life, wasting away in a luxury prison rec room with no love interest and no real storyline as her friends and family paid daily visits to tell her their problems. As of this writing, Alexis has recently been released from prison and is trying to find a new direction in life, but Grahn told Soap Opera Digest who she felt her character should date upon her release.
"I think a charming, clever, brilliant, smug, competitive, Republican attorney who she can't stand and can't stay away from," Grahn said when asked who Alexis' new man should be. "A little 'Adam's Rib' is always a winning formula," she added, referring to the classic movie starring Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.
It's not like Alexis has never dated someone who doesn't agree with her politically before. After all, she's had an on-again, off-again relationship with Ned Quartermaine for years, her more conservative opponent during her ill-fated run for mayor.
