Plot Lines From Past Days Of Our Lives Seasons That Wouldn't Fly Today
"Days of Our Lives" is the soap that gives fans Satanic possession about once every quarter of a century. Way back in 1994 and 1995, Dr. Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) was possessed by the devil and it happened to her again in 2021. As of this writing, citizens of the fictional town of Salem believe the devil has been exorcized from Marlena but have no idea Lucifer has taken up residence in Marlena's grandson, Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman) and is still causing trouble around town and the only person who seems to know is Susan Banks (Stacy Haiduk), who just has a sixth sense about these things, per Soaps.com.
One would think if a soap that can do a possession storyline twice could get away with just about anything, but in the year 2022, there are just some things that would never fly today that seemed to be perfectly acceptable in the 1960s, 1970s, and even 1980s.
Laura Horton marries her rapist
Psychiatrist Laura Horton (Susan Flannery) had been in love with Bill Horton (Ed Mallory) but when he broke off the romance, she ended up falling in love with his brother, Mickey Horton (John Clarke), and the two married (via Soaps In Depth). When Bill decided he wanted Laura back and she turned down his advances, he raped the woman he said he loved and she ended up pregnant. Laura confessed to what happened to Tom Horton (Macdonald Carey), Bill and Mickey's father, and he told her that Bill had to be her child's father because Mickey was sterile, something Mickey didn't even know.
Laura and Mickey raised Mike together until he was a teenager and the truth was revealed. Mickey and Laura broke up in dramatic soap opera fashion and Laura finally married Bill, the first man she had loved and the man who had raped her. Laura and Bill went on to have another child together, Jennifer Rose (Melissa Reeves), and Laura and Bill both died in recent years on "DOOL" — Bill in 2019 and Laura in 2021.
Sami's reaction to Will coming out
It was a little over a decade ago when "Days of Our Lives'" Will Horton (Chandler Massey) confessed to his parents, Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) and Lucas Horton (Bryan R. Dattilo), that he was gay and Sami's reaction was one that even today would never fly. Rather than being open and accepting, Sami refused to believe it was true, told Will she would know if this was true because she was his mother, and had a homophobic reaction to the news that would seem over-the-top in 2022. Fortunately, Will's dad, Lucas, was accepting from the start, according to Soaps.com. Eventually, Sami did come around, but her initial reaction to the news broke Will's heart.
Flash forward 10 years and Sami discovered that her daughter, Allie Horton (Lindsay Arnold), had feelings for another young woman named Chanel (Raven Bowens) (via Soaps.com), and one could tell Sami had learned from her mistakes with Will because she was understanding of Allie's situation and displayed none of her characteristic histrionics when she learned the news.
Alleged aliens arrive in Salem
The year was 2002 and teen character Shawn Brady (then played by Jason Cook) and Belle Black (then played by Kirsten Storms), went outside to watch a meteor shower and instead they saw what seemed to be a spaceship arrive. Out of the spaceship walked a young man and a young woman who Shawn and Belle decided were aliens that they had to hide. Eventually, these two alleged aliens were given names, Rex (Eric Winters) and Cassie (Alexis Thorpe), and were discovered to be actual humans and not aliens at all (via Soaps.com).
Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo), the supervillain known for performing scientific experiments on many characters, had created Rex and Cassie via Roman Brady's (Josh Taylor) sperm and Kate Roberts' (Lauren Koslow) eggs years ago and Marlena Evans carried the twins to term. Eventually, Cassie and Rex got used to life as regular Salemites, began calling Kate and Roman "Mom" and "Dad" and left town to find their own way in life. Only Rex (now played by Kyle Lowder) pops back up in Salem every once in a while, as of this writing, and he's turned out to be quite the playboy doctor.
