The Real Reason Jim Carrey Never Drinks Coffee

Jim Carrey is one of the funniest people alive, and his tenure in the entertainment industry certainly proves that he's got talent and skill. However, many may be surprised to learn that Carrey generally avoids coffee and caffeine, which is a further testament to how far he's come. Many require caffeine to function, but Carrey doesn't subscribe to this practice.

Carrey's career is ever-expanding in its scope. He's currently portraying Dr. Robotnik in the "Sonic the Hedgehog" film series and portrayed President Joe Biden on "SNL," which was a triumphant gig for Carrey, who didn't pass his "SNL" audition when he was younger. However, he's perhaps best known for his work on "The Mask," "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "Bruce Almighty," and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," as per IMDb. Interestingly, Carrey isn't the only celebrity to disavow caffeine. Jennifer Lopez avoids coffee to protect her skin, but Carrey avoids it for a different reason altogether (via Insider).

Jim Carrey's isn't coffee-free for physical health reasons

Carrey's career has been sustained virtually uncaffeinated, which is not only impressive but also not the norm. But Carrey avoids coffee to protect his mental health. According to Insider, Carrey has been very open about his consumption choices in life. In fact, in 2004, the actor told "60 Minutes," "I rarely drink coffee. I'm very serious about no alcohol, no drugs. Life is too beautiful." Carrey has been incredibly open about his mental health throughout the years, including his struggles to maintain it. For some, caffeine worsens their mental state and often becomes a drug. "Caffeine is similar to most other drugs that are reinforcing, which caffeine is. People desire the effect and repeat the behavior over and over again. When reinforcers like that are easily accessible and inexpensive, their use may get out of control," Alan Budney, a professor of psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School, told American Psychological Association (APA).

When Carrey began his coffee-free routine in 2013, he posted on Twitter, "I feel a sense of balance and fairness. I hate everything and everyone equally." In fact, he was following a routine that not only cut out coffee, but also wheat, sugar, dairy, alcohol, soda, and tobacco, among other things.

The APA further adds that too much coffee can lead to insomnia, a sign you're drinking too much caffeine. Not sleeping enough or well can lead to worsened mental health issues, meaning caffeine's effect on mental health is plural by nature. It also varies by person, so Carrey's understanding of his body and brain is admirable.
