Meet Edward Waters, Maxine Waters' Son
Since 1991, Maxine Waters has been the U.S. Representative for California's 43rd congressional district. Listed as one of Time's100 Most Influential People of 2018, the congresswoman represents a large portion of southern Los Angeles at the U.S. House of Representatives, including Westchester, Playa Del Ray, and Watts as well as Lennox, Inglewood, Gardena, and El Camino Village (via her biography at the U.S. House of Representatives).
Having worked in politics for over four decades, Waters has "been on the cutting edge, tackling difficult and often controversial issues," as her official bio notes, with a focus on issues like "poverty, economic development, equal justice under the law and other issues of concern to people of color, women, children, and poor people."
Aside from her political career, Waters is mother to two children — Karen and Edward Jr. — who she shares with her first husband, Edward Waters (via U.S News). The couple divorced in 1972, the same year that Waters graduated with a B.A. in sociology from the California State University in Los Angeles.
Waters went on to marry Sidney Williams, the former U.S. Ambassador to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas (via Meaww). But what else is known about her children, especially her son?
Edward Waters has occasionally worked as a campaign consultant for Maxine Waters
Both Maxine Waters' children have helped their mother during her campaigns, which has often got the congresswoman into hot water. According to an article published by the Los Angeles Times in 2004, Waters' family members earned over $1 million in the early noughties supporting her, especially when it came to her "slate mailer" — a sample ballot used in South Los Angeles to guide the choices of voters.
According to the newspaper, Karen Waters charged candidates for spots on this mailer and received earnings from it — as did Edward Jr. (via the Daily Mail). Waters' son would sometimes work as a consultant on campaigns that his mother supported.
Not much is known about Edward Jr. other than his involvement in his mother's campaigns, but the drama seems to lie more with her daughter Karen who reportedly earned over $80,000 from her mother's campaign funds throughout the past year.
