Makeover Trends Everyone Will Be Asking For In 2022
In keeping with how frenzied the last couple of years have been, makeover trends in 2022 will be a little bit all over the place as well. From bold and sparkly makeup, to throwback looks, to embracing your natural beauty, to being just plain "out there" (much like we're likely all hoping to be after so much time spent in quarantine in 2020) – this year is going to be fun. Regardless of your style preferences, there is going to be a lot of great options to choose from when it comes to fashion trends.
Now that a little over half of the United States has been vaccinated (per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and you're getting back into the swing of things, you're likely keen to refresh your look. Whether you're going for a natural look, or you'd prefer your face fully painted and your skin sparkly (per Who What Wear), the makeover trends of 2022 accomplish at least one thing: There's lots of room to be yourself, and we're all about it. Stay tuned for the makeover trends everyone will be asking for in 2022.
Being sparkly AF
Bedazzling your hair and makeup is going to be all the rage in 2022 — and we couldn't be more excited about it! Per In Style, 2022 is going to include throwback looks with what is referred to as "Y2K trends." Y2K (when the year turned from 1999 to 2000) was a time of irrational fear that the year changing to 2000 would cause computers to glitch and basically halt the world as we knew it. It was a little crazy, but it was also a time of bedazzling everything ... and it was awesome. People bedazzled their clothes, their cell phones, their Walkmans, their bags, and all the best cosmetics had sparkles, too.
In 2022, we'll be paying homage to this look with our own modern takes such as using white eyeliner, sparkling eyeshadows, and even going so far as putting jeweled stickers on our faces for maximum sparkle. We'll also be incorporating bedazzled hair (love it!). According to In Style, stars such as Saweetie and Alicia Keys have already been seen sporting this fun new look that's sure to take us into 2022. Rejoice — it's time to get sparkly AF!
Lip looks inspired by the '90s
2022 is shaping up to be a fun and nostalgic time for fashion with yet another throwback trend: '90s-inspired looks. New York-based makeup artist Delina Medhin told Allure that when it comes to makeup looks, "lip liner is here to stay." She went on to predict that "defined lips will be a big trend" in 2022. Think darker shades of lip liner paired with lighter shades of lipstick to match your complexion and/or make your lips look fuller. Or, for a more natural look, pair a lighter lip liner with an even lighter shade of gloss (another trendy '90s lip look).
Allure is also predicting that the brown lipstick trend popularized in the '90s will also be back, and lots of popular makeup brands have already released lipsticks and lip-glosses in the shade, just in time to stock up and be ready for the New Year. So, consider picking up your ideal shade of brown lipstick and lip liner to complete this trend in a pinch.
Adding tendrils of hair to your 'do
In keeping with the '90s throwback looks comes the incorporation of tendrils, small pieces of hair used to frame your face, into your look. This trend is expected to pop up in multiple forms in 2022, ranging from relaxed looks, like letting a few strands of hair hang out of your updo, to more statement looks, like braided tendrils. (Both are giving us some serious "Lizzie McGuire" flashbacks.)
Whether it's pieces of hair left out of a bun for your workout, side bangs left hanging in your face with an updo, or using braided tendrils to frame your face, this look is expected to make a comeback in all shapes and forms in 2022. Sally Hershberger, a celebrity stylist, told Bustle that this specific look will be "super cool, chic, and relaxed." She went on to add, "It's perfect for those that got trendy bangs this past year and decided to grow them out."
Getting super long hair with extensions
While the bob is expected to be back in 2022 in various lengths, longer hair will see a ton of popularity in 2022 when it comes to hair trends. Long, healthy, natural, and shiny hair will be sought out, but it might be unrealistic for many to grow their own hair out to these lengths by 2022. Therefore, getting extreme length through hair extensions — down to your shoulders, or even your waist if you're feeling daring — is going to be the ideal way to completely revamp your look. And, honestly, the beauty industry has come so far with great hair extensions, so this may be the way to get the "healthy and natural" look, anyway.
From '90s inspired long layers to "extreme lengths," 2022 is going to be about gloriously long locks. Celebrity stylist Clariss Rubenstein told Cosmopolitan that she predicts, "sleek, long, and straight being very big in 2022." Straight? Well, of course straight hair will be trending during the year of '90s and early 2000s throwbacks (like, duh!).
Blunt bangs are expected to make a comeback
Remember Courteney Cox's hair in the first "Scream," or Krysten Ritter's hair in basically all of her roles prior to "Jessica Jones"? Well, get ready for that look to make a comeback in 2022. Cosmopolitan reports that celebrity hairstylist Anthony Campbell "predicts a heavier, straight across, blunt bang will be super popular for 2022." If you desire bangs that are thick, simple, and make a statement – this could be the new style for you.
This may not be the easiest look to pull off, so if you take the plunge and regret it, curtain bangs are also expected to make a comeback in 2022 (per Southern Living). So, you have the option of that trendy look as a fallback (assuming you're not the Krysten Ritter of your friend group like you thought you were). To give the blunt bang look its best bet at success, consider pairing it with a longer cut to avoid any Oompa Loompa jokes.
Food-inspired hair color (yum!)
While hair color in 2022 is expected to err on the side of "natural looks," this doesn't mean that we won't be enhancing, highlighting, or flat-out dyeing our hair for the fun of it. In 2022, some popular hair colors are going to be inspired by fall food favorites, such as honey, caramel, and even pumpkin spice (we're getting hungry already).
For blondes, honey highlights are expected to take off, as well as a color called "pumpkin spice blonde" (per Bustle). Both looks are meant to metaphorically keep you warm all winter long with their warm and soft hues. Those wanting a completely new look regardless of natural hair color should consider dyeing all their hair a warm shade of honey blonde. This look also achieves that "warm" look that will be darling both with winter sweaters and all the springtime dresses.
For brunettes, honey highlights achieve the same effect of adding dimension and warmth to your hair color. Brunettes, however, also have the option of the "melted caramel" or cinnamon looks. The melted caramel look adds delicate caramel highlights to darker shades of brown to give a warm and dimensional feel.
Playground highlights in the hair
The goal of the "playground highlights" trend is to embrace the shade your hair would be naturally if you were still a child spending a considerable amount of time playing out in the sunshine, having your hair constantly kissed by the sun. This is the kind of adorable trend that simultaneously takes us back to a simpler time and inspires a sense of childlike optimism we could all use as we take on 2022.
According to Allure, playground highlights will be all the rage in 2022. Stars such as Taylor Swift, Emma Stone, and Jourdan Dunn have already provided fabulous examples of this trend in 2021 for inspiration. This look is fantastic because it simply lightens your natural hair color, so it works for all hair colors and hair types. The idea is just to get a lighter highlight of your natural shade so that your hair looks natural, but still more brilliant and pleasing to the eye.
Strawberry brown is the new red
Bright red is always a fun color to experiment with, but let's be honest — it's a tough look to pull off. On the other hand, a softer red that combines your natural shade with more subtle red hues is a great alternative that gets you that fun color you want, while still maintaining a natural feel. This is especially true for brunettes (or those wanting to go brunette in 2022). This color is particularly perfect for spring, as these colors truly pop in the sunshine.
Yet another food-inspired color, the "strawberry brown" hair color combines medium brown hair with gorgeous shades of pinkish red that are reminiscent of strawberry jam or chilled cherry Kool-Aid dripping down your chin on a warm spring day. Per Southern Living, this gorgeous shade of brown with a translucent red hue is expected to be seen everywhere in 2022. And we're SO into it ... and suddenly craving a raspberry donut.
Eyes that make a statement
In 2022, we're going to be doing all kinds of fun stuff with our eye makeup, such as elaborate designs, double-winged eyeliner, "disco brows," and neon eyeshadow and eyeliner. Per Harper's Bazaar, in 2022, we can expect neon shades of eyeshadow and eyeliner to be popular, and we can even look forward to being able to wear stick-on jewels on our faces to enhance our makeup looks.
According to Allure, "beauty trends tend to start on fashion runways," and the runways this year contained a plethora of "bold eye makeup" looks including sparkly eye shadows, colorful makeup looks, and graphic designs. So, another fun eye makeup trend for 2022 will be literally drawing designs on our eyes with eyeliner -– likely incorporating a double-winged look as well. Also, we can look forward to the staying power of "disco brows" (basically applying sparkles to your eyebrows and brushing them upward) — something we can all get behind.
Get a French manicure – with a twist
Per Cosmopolitan, the French manicure has been gradually making a comeback that will likely be "the look" in 2022. But let's get real – the standard white-tipped French manicure is a little ... tired. Therefore, French tips that are bold and fun is going to be the go-to look for nails in 2022. To be extra popular, go with shades of blue or add a strip of sparkly nail polish angled off to the side (both expected to be popular in 2022, per Cosmopolitan).
Tell the truth — you've missed getting French tip manicures (so have we). And now, it's time to take this comeback and have a ton of fun with it. Whether it's metallics, neon colors, or a signature combination of colors and designs unique to you – get ready to experiment with colors, designs, and surprise accents (also expected to be popular) with your French tips in 2022.
Get your black lights out – it's all about that neon in 2022
Style Caster predicts that by 2022, we'll be in "full-on neon." Specifically, Style Caster pointed out colors that are more traditional in the summer months, such as bright shades of yellow, orange, and green, being popular in our clothing choices. This may be a great way to brighten your mood and force yourself out of the "winter blues" that plagues some at the start of the New Year. Since neon colors are also expected to be trendy for eye makeup looks, we get the option of easily matching our outfits to our makeup.
Get inspired by '80s and '90s nostalgia or a desire to stand out in the crowd and get ready to start donning neon colors so bright, they low-key hurt the eyes of onlookers as you strut through 2022. These looks will be great to metaphorically "warm-up" your attire in the winter months, and then have you looking all kinds of ready for spring. It's truly a win-win look.
Enhance your natural look
For those that are known for a particular makeup look and/or are constantly coloring their hair, it may be time to mix it up by going for a more natural look. Of course, by more "natural," we mean natural tones for your makeup and going along with the post-quarantine trend of being more "practical, natural, and faithful to [your] true colors" (per Cosmopolitan) when it comes to your hair.
Embracing who we are naturally is basically one of the only good things to come out of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we're all about it. However, we all know "going natural" sounds good ... until you get a zit and want to cover it up, or your natural hair turns frizzy, dry, and unmanageable. Therefore, getting a hair gloss to enhance your natural hair color and getting natural highlights to highlight your natural color is going to be ideal for this look.
Try out low-rise pants and showing off your torso
The rumor that low-rise pants — specifically low-rise jeans, considering the popularity of the Y2K fashion movement — have been circulating a lot in 2021, with many news outlets declaring the look "officially back" (via Refinery 29). Some are excited about the trend making a comeback, and some dread the inevitable "muffin tops." Regardless of your feelings on the matter, the runways don't lie. Low-rise pants and showing off "maximum midriff" were particularly popular on the runway for 2022, with brands such as Miu Miu, Coperni, Isabel Marant, and Giorgio Armani making it clear that we can expect low-rise pants and barely-there crop tops come Spring of 2022, per Vogue.
Although this particular trend was met with criticism, considering that it was seen as "a mode to emphasize thinness" (per Vogue), designers like Maryam Nassir Zadeh, KNWLS, Collina Strada, and Chromat showed this look on more voluptuous models (sound the applause) emphasizing that this look is for absolutely everyone in 2022.
Get ready for 2022 with some of these fabulous makeovers full of nostalgia, flare, and fun!
