Here's What Different Generations Of Brits Really Think Of William And Kate
Prince William and Kate Middleton are the modern-day royals. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are shaking things up and changing the face of the royal family as they prepare for their future roles as king and queen. While the duo were supposed to modernize the monarchy alongside William's brother Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, those dreams were dashed with Harry and Meghan opted to exit the duties as senior members of the Firm (via Page Six). Now, despite the fact that Prince Charles is next in line for the throne, the future of the royals rests with William and Kate.
Royal expert Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton reveals that the Cambridges are the perfect people to bring the monarchy into the future, telling People, "[They] are playing a really important role in finding a point of connection for a different range of subjects that the family hasn't always connected with," the former staffer admitted.
Lowther-Pinkerton added, "[William] has the experience of knowing where the institution sits and seeing it evolve. The Duchess brings this pragmatic awareness of what it's like to be from a decent, down-to-earth family."
While William and Kate seem to be popular around the globe, not all of their subjects are in total support of them.
William and Kate's popularity may be lower than you think
According to Vogue, Prince William and Kate Middleton are two of the most famous people in the world. However, they may not be as popular in the U.K. as some fans may expect. The royal family has taken some hits as of late, including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's exit from royal life, and allegations about Prince Andrew's connection with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The family has also been a bit less public as the COVID-19 pandemic forced many, including the royals, to stay at home and keep to themselves more.
The family, including William and Kate, is now being seen in public more often, but their popularity might have taken a hit over the past two years. Queen Elizabeth remains the most popular royal with an overall approval rating of 72% (via YouGov). Meanwhile, Prince William has an overall rating of 62%, but among millennials that dips to 50%. Older generations view him more favorably; he has a 72% rating among Gen X, and 73% with baby boomers. Kate has an overall rating of only 60%, which includes the approval of just 46% of millennials, but 66% of Gen Xers and 70% of boomers.
However, William and Kate are still working on modernizing the monarchy while keeping some of the most important traditions alive. They're also relatable to many due to their status as parents, and their charity work. The expectation is that the Cambridges will continue to grow in popularity as the years push on and they get closer to the throne.
