This New Masked Singer Twist Could Change The Game Entirely
"The Masked Singer" is returning for Season 6, and fans couldn't be happier to have the show back. The series features masked celebrities singing and dancing on stage as the audience, at-home viewers, and the panelists try their best to figure out which famous face is behind the costume. The show offers up clues to the stars' identities, which everyone must piece together in hopes of guessing correctly, per Parade.
Season 6 is set for a huge two-night premiere, which will start on September 22 and conclude on September 23, 2021. The costumes that have been revealed for the upcoming season include a baby, a duo team dressed as a banana split, a beach ball, bull, cupcake, Dalmatian, hamster, jester, mallard, octopus, pepper, queen of hearts, mother nature, and skunk.
After each episode, the audience and panelists — Jenny McCarthy, Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong, and Nicole Scherzinger — vote for their favorite performers. The contestant who gets the least amount of votes is eliminated from the competition and unmasked right then and there. The star will then take off their mask and reveal their true identity before performing one final song for the fans. However, Season 6 is changing up the rules a bit and offering up an intriguing twist that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
The stakes are higher for the panelists during Season 6 of The Masked Singer
Entertainment Weekly reports that "The Masked Singer" is offering an elimination twist for Season 6. A brand new "Take It Off Buzzer" has been included in the show. The buzzer comes into play when one of the panelists believes they know without a doubt who the star behind the costume is. If they push the button and guess the star correctly, the contestant will be forced to unmask right then and there. They'll also be eliminated from the competition. If this happens. the panelist will get two points toward winning the coveted Golden Ear Trophy. However, if they guess wrong, they'll lose two points and the contestant will be allowed to stay in the competition.
"The whole idea to introduce this is just to add spontaneity. Our panel keeps saying, 'I know who it is,' but we wanted to put them to the test," the show's executive producer Craig Plestis said. "So the Take It Off Buzzer can be used any time in the show, anytime. As long as that contestant's on the stage, and [the panelist] thinks they know who that person is, they can hit that buzzer." Plestis also admitted that in addition to losing two points, the panelist will get an additional penalty for an incorrect guess. However, he's refusing to spoil the surprise just yet. "It's something that is absolutely humiliating," he teased, via EW.
Fans can catch "The Masked Singer" Season 6 premiere on September 22 and 23 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
