Is Kim Kardashian's TikTok Viral Skims Dress Really Worth It?
If you spend any time at all on TikTok, you might have felt tempted to buy a piece of clothing that seemingly everybody on the platform raved about. TikTok is known for fashionable outfits, of-the-moment trends, and great wardrobe hacks, among other things.
Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian is known for being a great businesswoman, and one of the mogul's newest businesses is her fashionable line of shapewear, intimates, and loungewear, Skims. The "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star told Nordstrom why she created the brand.
"I have always loved wearing shapewear but realized there was a lack of options when I couldn't find anything that really worked for me. Pieces were either too thick, too loose, too tight, didn't have the right support, or just didn't mold to my body the way I wanted them to," she said. "I began to experiment on my own by constructing pieces made from other garments, and I would cut a leg or even dye fabric to get the right shade."
TikTok users have been raving in videos and comments about one Skims dress in particular. But is the garment from the size- and shade-inclusive brand really worth the investment? Read on to find out.
Here's the skinny on the Skims bodycon dress
The Skims Soft Lounge Long Slip Dress ($78) that went viral on TikTok comes in 10 colors in sizes from XXS to 4X. According to Input, the dress often sells out in specific sizes and colors, but it also restocks occasionally. Although the dress is bodycon, wearers reported that it feels like butter against your skin, unlike typical shapewear and loungewear. While several commenters noted that the garment is long, Input revealed that tugging the curve-hugging dress up produces a nice ruching effect without tripping over the extra length on the floor.
Refinery29 checked out the dress' fit for plus sizes. Writer Chichi Offer tried it in black and size 3X, and she worried when she opened the package. "It seemed so slim, so I was worried it'd hug my body in a way that made me feel uncomfortable and restricted," she said. "It's very common for some brands to carry clothing in what seems like extended sizing that doesn't actually fit plus-size bodies, so I was worried that would be the case with Skims." Once Offer put on the dress, she loved it, though.
Others who tried the popular frock noted that it had stretchiness while remaining opaque, which surprised them. In all, it seems if you have $78 and can find the dress in the size and color you want, it's worth a try.
