Don't Book A Sugaring Appointment Until You Read This

Waxing. Who hasn't done it before? One of the most common hair removal methods, waxing may be everyone's least favorite method now that sugaring has been popularized. What is sugaring? Well, according to Byrdie, sugaring consists of using a sticky paste made of sugar, lemon, and water to remove hair. What's so great about sugaring is that it doesn't remove live skin cells (like waxing). That said, since it's pulling the hair from the root, the likelihood of growing ingrown hairs is slim!

Like waxing, sugaring can work on any body area — genitals, underarms, legs, etc. And, what's so great about this hair removal method is that it's generally painless, Byrdie added. "Sugaring does not stick to live skin cells — only to the hair and dead skin cells — which means less irritation and discomfort," Alexandra Accardo, esthetician and sugaring expert, said. "There's still a bit of an ouch factor when sugaring, as it's still pulling out hair from the root, but the feedback we've received from our guests is that most find it less painful than waxing."

Though sugaring has plenty of upsides, there are some things you need to know before scheduling your sugaring appointment.

There are some restrictions when it comes to sugaring

Yes, you're eager to head to your sugaring appointment; however, there are some restrictions with getting sugared. One being if you're expecting — you may not be able to be sugared, per Healthline. It's best to check with your doctor beforehand, as your skin may be extra sensitive due to the pregnancy.

Next, you must remove any piercings before getting sugared. Why? According to the outlet, not only does removing your piercings before getting sugared ensure all hair is removed, but it also decreases the risk of getting your piercings infected. And, if you're sunburned, you're better off waiting until your skin is nice and smooth before removing any hair. Sugaring, which requires exfoliation, will irritate your burns (and honestly, that's the last thing you need when your skin is healing from sun damage).

Aside from pregnancy, sunburn, and piercings, if you're enduring chemotherapy or are taking antibiotics, birth control, or retinoids, it's best to consult with your doctor before making the appointment, the outlet added. That way, you're protecting your body while also getting all your hair removed!
