The Stunning Transformation Of The Kardashians
It's almost hard to remember a world before the Kardashians were a household name. Thanks to the hit E! reality TV show Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Khloe, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian, along with mama Kris, brother Rob, and little sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner, have, for many of us, become like part of our extended families. From celebrating the births of Kim and Kanye's beautiful babies North and Saint West, to sharing the heartache after Khloe announced her divorce from NBA star husband Lamar Odom, Kardashian fans have been through a lot with this famous family.
Those of us who've been along for the ride from the very beginning, have also witnessed the famous sisters go through some incredible style transformations — maybe even changing up our own looks along with them. In celebration of our favorite Hollywood clan, let's take a look back at how the Kardashians have evolved through the years.
From assistant to superstar
Before she was pop culture royalty, a then 27-year-old Kim Kardashian was Paris Hilton's stylist and assistant, making cameos in 2007 on the reality show, The Simple Life, which starred Hilton and her then BFF Nicole Richie. But it wasn't long before Kim was getting attention of her own, eventually landing herself — and her soon-to-be famous family — a new reality show on E!.
Even back then, Kim was gorgeous with impeccable olive skin, long black hair, and curves we hadn't seen on anyone in Hollywood just yet. She was glam, sexy, and knew how to accentuate her assets, sporting Herve Ledger's body hugging bandage dresses nearly everywhere she went. Kim's sister Khloe was also a fan of the designer, wearing this electric blue number to the L.A. Direct Magazine Expansion Party in West Hollywood back in 2007.
Red carpet cuties
As their older sisters took the Hollywood spotlight and got their flagship family DASH boutique off the ground, fresh-faced Kendall and Kylie Jenner (just 12 and 10 years old in 2007), were your average preteens — complete with braces, freckles and plenty of pink in their wardrobe.
Yes, these girls were just like the rest of us. Well, except for the whole red carpet thing, which they are total masters at working, these days.
Reality star royalty
Three seasons into their E! reality show, the Kardashians had officially skyrocketed to superstardom by 2009. Kourtney, 30, and her then-beau Scott Disick graced the cover of Life & Style magazine after the birth of their son Mason, Khloe, 25, married Lamar Odom, and 29-year-old Kim bared it all for W magazine.
The sisters were also making a name for themselves as fashion icons, opening their second DASH store in Miami, scoring the E! reality spinoff Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami, and releasing the book Kardashian Konfidential, where they shared tidbits about their personal lives and individual styles.
Back then, Kourtney was all about the LBD, like when she wore this Alexander Wang dress to Maxim's "10th annual Hot 100" party in Beverly Hills. Khloe had also ditched her sparkly minis for a more classic look, attending the Famous Cupcakes store grand opening in Beverly Hills in a gorgeous deep purple asymmetrical dress, with sheer black booties. In an interview with Marta Walsh for TalkingMakeup.com, the then 25-year-old described her personal style as, "Classic, but I like to make it sexy — like, to unbutton it a little and show cleavage." She added, "I'm not trendy."
Blonde bombshell
Kim, on the other hand, was all about taking risks with her looks. In August 2009, the star caused quite the stir when she switched up her signature dark locks for oh-so-blonde tresses. "I needed an end of summer change," Kim, then 29, told People. "I've never dyed my hair before and I've been working out, feeling so great — why not add to the change?"
"It suited her coloring," added Rebecca Friedman, the celebrity hair stylist responsible for transforming Kim into a blonde bombshell. "We couldn't take her platinum because her coloring is too dark — you have to take into account not only her hair color, but her eye and skin color." Kim would eventually go all the way, thanks to colorist Lorri Goddard, and rock a platinum blonde lob while attending Balmain's Paris 2015 runway show.
A global powerhouse
By 2011, the Kardashian sisters had built a multimillion dollar empire that included everything from jewelry to clothes to fragrances. Their newest fashion launch that year, the Kardashian Kollection for Sears, included pieces inspired by each of their individual styles at the time. "My style is definitely a bit sexier," Kim told Elle magazine. "I really gravitated toward the long corset-style black dress in the collection."
Kourtney loved the collection's flowy skirts and dresses. "I'm into vintage '70s outfits at the moment," she told the magazine.
Khloe, meanwhile, was all about making a statement with the accessories. "I like wearing jeans and a white button-up shirt — but Kim and Kourtney think I'm edgy because I'm into crazy accessories," she said. "I love funky shoes and hats. I'm into large-brimmed fedoras with big feathers in fun colors like purple and lime-yellow. I just think hats add pizzazz to your outfits."
Finding true love with Yeezy
Kim has never had trouble finding interested suitors. The reality star famously dated funny man Nick Cannon, NFL superstar Reggie Bush, and NBA baller Kris Humphries, who she famously married on an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2011.
Several months after her very public split from Humphries (after just 72 days of marriage), Kim was in love again. In 2012, Kim, then 32, made tyhings official with longtime friend and superstar rapper Kanye West, 35. "It's very comforting to have someone that knows everything about you, that respects you, understands, has gone through the similar things," Kim said in an interview with Oprah. The two were so in sync, in fact, that Kanye began curating Kim's clothes.
She soon ditched her usual corset dresses for more classic looks by designers like Givenchy. Kim also confirmed to Us that Kanye had a major influence on her style. "I dress for my man way more than for myself," she told the magazine. "He likes cool, drapey things. Very casual."
Relationship goals
Kim and Kanye's romance went way deeper than simply exchanging fashion ideas. The two looked smitten in April 2012 when they were spotted out together in NYC. That same year, a glowing Kim told Oprah about her relationship with Kanye, "I feel like I'm in a really happy, good space."
What was different? Perhaps it was because Kanye was an older man. "I just love that I'm with someone that's a couple years older than me," she explained in a 2012 interview on RyanSeacrest.com (via UsWeekly). She added, "I feel like I've had an epiphany over the past year from what I've been through, and I am that changed person just from my own experiences."
All grown up
Remember preteen cuties Kendall and Kylie Jenner? Well, by 2012, this duo was taking inspiration from their older sisters and having a style transformation of their own. Bright pink tanks turned into LBDs. Braces turned into rosy lipgloss and smokey eyes.
The sisters also added "fashion designer" to their ever-growing resumes, scoring major collaborations with Forever 21 and PacSun, as well as their own fashion jewelry line with Glamhouse, according to People, who also houses collections by other celebs, including Nicole Richie and big sis Kim. "We love accessories, and it's amazing that we're going to have our own line to be able to wear everyday," the Jenner sisters told the magazine.
One hot mama
By 2013, Kim and Kanye were proud new parents to daughter North West, but that didn't stop them from showing off their new high-fashion style on the red carpet. The couple channeled old Hollywood at the 2013 Met Gala when Kim, 33, wore a blue, strapless Lavin gown, accented by Lorraine Schwartz drop earrings and side-swept waves.
She looked absolutely stunning, and she had her hubby Kanye to thank. "He [Kanye] really inspires me, and has introduced me to a lot of people in fashion that I really respect and like their taste," Kim said in an interview with People.
But even more than donning a new look, Kim was, for the first time, basking in the glow of new motherhood. "It completely changed my life," she said in a 2013 Mobio Insider Q&A (via E! Online). "You have a different set of [priorities]. Nothing matters except your brand new family."
Fitness is the best medicine
By 2014, 35-year-old Kourtney was a mom of three. After giving birth to her third child, Reign Disick, in late 2014, the oldest Kardashian sister started her wellness journey, working her way down to a slim 116 pounds, thanks to a healthier diet. "Everything she eats is very fresh, handmade, less processed, less garbage," Kourtney's New York-based yoga teacher Leila Johnson told E! News. "We make our own roasted trail mixes. We use coconut oil, raw pumpkin seeds and other nuts."
Revenge body
Like her sister Kourtney, Khloe had started her own wellness journey. After finalizing her divorce from Lamar Odom in 2015, Khloe, then 31, revealed on Australian radio show Nova FM, that she had dropped an impressive 35 pounds, and was in the best shape of her life, thanks to a new love affair — with the gym. "I know how I want to feel in clothes and it does become addicting once you start losing weight and seeing results," she said in the interview. "You're like, 'I wanna see more.'"
And see more we have. Since dropping the weight, Khloe's ditched her fur vests and funky fedoras for sleek, plunging necklines and minimal jewelry.
Killing it on the catwalk
By 2015, Kendall had made some life changes of a slightly different kind — reaching supermodel stardom. The 20-year-old looked picture-perfect when she made her debut at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in the fall, walking the runway alongside her bestie, fellow supermodel Gigi Hadid.
But this certainly wasn't Kendall's first moment in the spotlight. The Kardashians' not-so-little sister (who is 5'10") had already built up an impressive resume, walking in fashion shows for Chanel, Diane Von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs and Fendi.
Shutting down the haters
Kendall's catwalk confidence seemed to spill over into other aspects of her life, as well. In 2015, the newly outspoken supermodel took to her website to put social media haters in their place. "When you're being looked at under such a microscope, you try to be aware of what you post," she wrote (via Vivala.com). She also admitted that she had gotten to a place where instead of letting the negativity get to her, she used it as a motivator. "I think that's how my career got started in a way — like an 'I wanted to prove them wrong' kind of thing because no one ever thought I could do what I'm doing right now."
Kendall also started to become more vocal about issues that mattered to her, like when she chose to take a stand against gun violence, which played out on an 2016 episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
Nothing like your first love
Kim and Kanye haven't been the only Kardashian-clan couple making us all smitten. In 2015, E! Online reported that a then 17-year-old Kylie was dating 24-year-old rapper Tyga. We also got a very subtle sneak peek of the young romance when Kylie posted this photo on her Instagram.
But apparently things between the two got quite serious. By 2016, the on-again, off-again couple were reportedly living together in Kylie's newly-purchased Hidden Hills home, according to People.
Kylie fever
Kylie has also stepped into the spotlight as a style icon in 2015. The youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner sisters absolutely loves fashion and is constantly experimenting with new looks, which she shares with her fans on Instagram and SnapChat. But her biggest style inspiration might be her big sis Kim. "I would want her whole closet if I could switch her shoe size," she said in an interview with Harpar's Bazaar.
Kylie has also become known for her signature plump lips, which — she revealed on an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians — she chose to enhance with the help of temporary lip fillers, after years of feeling insecure. Kylie's lips got so much attention, in fact, that she even launched her Kylie Jenner Lip Kit in 2016 — selling out in less than 10 minutes during the first launch.
Happy parents, happy kids
If you've been Keeping Up With the Kardashians from the very beginning, then you've definitely witnessed the many ups and downs of Kourtney's relationship with her now estranged beau, Scott Disick. But despite a public break up, a stint in rehab and cheating allegations, the parents of three adorable kiddos (Mason, Penelope and Reign), seem to have made peace with each other. During a 2016 visit to The Ellen Degeneres Show, Kourtney said she and Scott were "totally getting along," calling him, "family."
In 2017, Scott admitted he and his ex were good co-parents, according to People, saying, "We never had any negativity between us and we made a very smooth transition into the way we live."
The family that wears couture together, stays together
These days it looks like the entire Kardashian-Jenner clan has a passion for high fashion. In February 2016, the entire family stepped out in coordinating outfits to support Kanye when he debuted his newest collection at New York Fashion Week in 2016. Later that year, Kourtney, Kim and mama Kris stunned in coordinating Balmain numbers as they sat front row to watch the designer's Paris Fashion Week runway show in September 2016. And after living off the radar for several months, Kim Kardashian West reappeared during 2017's New York Fashion Week, switching things up yet again with several high fashion street looks.
As for the future, there's no telling what kind of style we'll find the Kardashians sporting next, or what family dramas and adventures will unfold. But one thing's for sure, this is one family that we'll always want to keep up with!
