The Truth About BenDeLaCreme And Jinkx Monsoon's Friendship
"RuPaul's Drag Race" has made the art of drag a global phenomenon. Because of this, drag artists in the United States and abroad are becoming more accepted, and some of these artists have formed friendships that are taking them very far in their careers. Of note is the friendship between BenDeLaCreme, who was on Season 6 of the hit competition reality series and Season 3 of its "All Stars" spinoff, and Jinkx Monsoon, who won the series' 5th season, per The Queer Review. The two have been close friends for years and are now working together more than ever, including a shared appearance in the queer holiday movie "Happiest Season."
According to DeLa, she and Jinkx have been friends for about a decade, meaning they were friends before either of them appeared on "Drag Race." On her friendship with Jinkx, she told The Queer Review, "Jinkx and I have really similar influences and aesthetics, and a love and appreciation of drag and classic Hollywood, and burlesque, and vaudeville, but we also have really different sensibilities and that's most obviously illustrated through the characters we bring to the stage..."
The two drag queens put their similar tastes together in 2020 for a film titled "The Jinkx and DeLa Holiday Special," which sees the two performers in an all-out holiday-themed variety show.
This is what makes these drag queens' friendship so enviable
BenDeLaCreme and Jinkx Monsoon share a lot in common, but it's perhaps their laughter that keeps the two bonded together. According to Evie Appleson, who interviewed DeLa for The Mancunion, DeLa is just as genuine and caring as she appears on the stage or on the screen, and she's just as funny. DeLa confirmed this, saying that she and Jinkx's comedy is "central" to their friendship.
At the same time, DeLa is inspired by Jinkx's wit. "Her vivaciousness and the immediacy she brings as a performer has really inspired me to play more and to really expand the way that I perform," she told The Queer Review. "Our chemistry is so good, our dynamic is so good, and we have each other to bounce off of, and I think that really elevates everything," she then said, explaining what we all know: that two powerhouse performers put together make an incredibly hilarious show.
Moreover, Jinkx, in an interview with Broadway World, explained that both of them have "Type A personalities," which helps them accomplish things together while still remaining close friends. With these two, they never have to fear that their friendship might slip through the cracks. To match their "Type A personalities," DeLa further shared in this interview that they're both "performers who tightly script," meaning they prefer rehearsing to improv.
Ultimately, these two drag queens show that friendship in the workplace is possible as long as you just have fun with it. "The Jinkx and DeLa Holiday Special" is available on Hulu.
