Can You Really Use Potatoes To Treat A Sunburn?

It is officially sunburn season, folks. And try as you might to apply and reapply your trusty SPF, sometimes those pesky UV rays sneak through and leave you looking a bit like a tomato. And while lotion and aloe are all well and good for treating the sting, you may have something in your kitchen pantry that could provide quick relief as well. Along with being able to "boil 'em, mash 'em, and stick 'em in a stew," you can also use potatoes to treat a sunburn. That's right, Sam Gamgee's favorite snack can also be balm on that burn.

There are quite a few kitchen items that can help to treat a sunburn. Common groceries like milk, apple cider vinegar, and even yogurt can help soothe painful skin after you get too much sun. But potatoes are a powerful remedy for a sunburn because of the starch they contain, according to Good Housekeeping.

How to treat a sunburn with potatoes

There are a couple of ways to apply potatoes to your sunburnt skin, and the method you choose will likely depend on the severity of the burn and your level of sensitivity. The easiest option is to just slice a potato and rub it directly on your skin to get all of that starchy goodness where you need it most (per The Daily Meal). And if you're looking for a little bit of added relief, you can pop that tater in the fridge for a bit before you use it and enjoy the cooling sensation as well.

Another option, which might be preferable if your skin is too sensitive to rub with a potato, is to blend the potatoes and make them into a salve. You can then apply it directly to your skin with either your hand or a paper towel. You can apply it as thick or thin as you want, and leave it on like a lotion or wash it off if you feel so inclined.

This summer remember to apply your sunscreen regularly and avoid getting burnt. But sun happens, so if you do find yourself hurting after a Hot Girl Summer beach day, reach for some potatoes and get some relief.
