Demi Lovato Just Made A Big Personal Announcement
Demi Lovato – who's had a stunning transformation — has come out as nonbinary and revealed they have changed their pronouns to they/them. According to People, the singer made the personal announcement on an episode of their new podcast "4D with Demi Lovato," during which they had a personal discussion with the gender nonconforming writer and performer, Alok Vaid-Menon.
"Over the past year and a half, I've been doing some healing and self-reflective work. And through this work, I've had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I'll be officially changing my pronouns to they/them," Lovato said. Speaking on the podcast, Lovato continued, "I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am, and am still discovering."
Per Harper's Bazaar, the "Confident" singer also explained how they believe pressures to be "the sexy, feminine pop star" may have contributed to their overdose in 2018. "I feel like the reason why that happened was because I was ignoring my truth, and I was suppressing who I really am in order to please stylists, or team members," Lovato said. "I thought that was what I was supposed to be and now I just realize that it's so much more important to live your truth than to ever suppress yourself because that's the type of stuff that happens when you do."
Demi Lovato wants people to make an effort to use their correct pronouns
During the podcast episode, Demi Lovato also confided that it would "mean the world" to them if people began "identifying me as they/them," adding they would sympathize with fans who accidentally used the incorrect pronoun because what means most is that people are "making the effort" (via People). "I think it's important because I want to use these pronouns that feel right to me ... I also just don't want people to be so afraid of messing up that they don't try to use them," they added.
Posting on Twitter on Thursday, May 19, 2021, Lovato also revealed the decision to come out as non-binary arrived "after a lot of healing and self-reflective work."
"I'm still learning and coming into myself, and I don't claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me," Lovato wrote. The singer continued by saying that they made the decision with the hope that others will see their authenticity and be inspired to live their truth. "Please keep living in your truths and know I am sending so much love your way," they wrote.
