Why Lizzo's Bold 2019 Met Gala Look Still Has People Talking
The Met Gala is undeniably one of the most exclusive and important events in fashion. Each year Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, invites a group of the hottest celebrities, socialites, and designers of the year (via Independent). Wintour also selects cochairs to host the annual event and helps choose the theme (via PopSugar). The theme for the 2019 Met Gala was "Camp: Notes on Fashion", which was inspired by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay "Notes on 'Camp'" (via Harpers Bazaar). Camp fashion is often very over the top. It can be humorous or ironic and it's always eye-catching.
In anticipation of the 2019 event, many lovers of fashion and followers of the event discussed who they were excited to see at the gala. Naturally, people were anticipating show-stopping looks from Met Gala fixtures like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, and more Hollywood it-girls. While these women certainly nailed the theme — it's hard to forget Lady Gaga's 16 minute-entrance — an unexpected attendee stole the show.
Lizzo loved her look so much she carried it into the next morning
Grammy-award-winning artist Lizzo's appearance at the 2019 Met Gala marked her first time attending the star-studded event. The "Truth Hurts" singer was dressed by world-renowned designer Marc Jacobs in a sparkle-encrusted light pink dress and a feathery floor-length neon pink coat (via PopSugar). The singer kept with the pink theme by styling bubble pink hair into an updo. For accessories, she wore a bedazzled headband and beads on her hands and nails. To complete her look she went with a similar pink shade for her eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick. In an interview with Vogue's Red Carpet correspondent Liza Koshy, Lizzo said "I feel very sexy, glamorous, expensive and beautiful, b****, and I'm about to go have my first drink of the night" (via YouTube).
The star carried this energy into the next morning when she was spotted strumming through an airport wearing the same Marc Jacobs cape she wore to the Met Gala (via People). The singer shared a clip of herself strutting through the airport in her iconic cape to her Instagram. As noted by Harper's Bazaar, Lizzo also wore sunglasses, carried a Celine purse, and brought a stuffed monkey with her. On the plane, she reportedly wore camouflage-print bottoms, a red crop top, and UGG boots.
As to be expected, her posts gained a lot of attention from celebrity fans of her look. Actress Kiernan Shipka commented, "This is the most important video on the internet" while Marc Jacobs reposed the video himself.
