This Phoebe Fan Theory Will Change The Way You See Friends

The classic '90s sitcom "Friends" is still held close to the hearts of many, and the character of Phoebe Buffay — portrayed by Lisa Kudrow — is to this day considered a highlight of the hit series. However, one major fan theory about the quirky masseuse puts Phoebe in a very different light and, if there's any truth to this particular theory, it will likely change how you see the sitcom forever.

The fan theory in question was shared by Twitter user Gareth Stranks, who suggested that Phoebe Buffay was in fact a homeless woman who never made it off the streets, and had imagined the entire series while under the influence of drugs.

According to Screen Rant, this wild fan theory also stated that Phoebe never actually had a relationship with the other five friends, and would watch Rachel, Monica, Ross, Chandler, and Joey through the window of Central Perk while they enjoyed their coffee inside on the show's signature couch.

The 'Friends' co-creator shared her thoughts on the fan theory

In the fan theory, Gareth Stranks also shared how he believed the beloved NBC sitcom should have ended (via Twitter). "Phoebe walks past a furniture store and catches her reflection in a mirror placed in the window. The name of the store? 'Ursula'" Stranks continued, "Finally, she returns to the park where she sleeps in front of the fountain. A broken lamp stands next to her bench. It starts to rain. From behind, we see her put up six dirty, but brightly coloured umbrellas. Fade to black."

Back in 2017, "Friends" co-creator Marta Kauffman shared her thoughts on the dark fan theory. "That's the saddest thing I've ever heard," she told Entertainment Tonight. "I never heard that — that's a terrible theory. That's insane! That's, like, that's like crazy alt-television theory. Wow."

Kauffman continued, "I'm fascinated. I just think that someone needs a life. Someone needs a life, that's all I'm saying."
