Gwyneth Paltrow Reveals The Truth About Her Time In Lockdown
As it turns out, even wellness gurus have been letting themselves go during quarantine. Oscar-winning actress and Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow recently revealed that at one point in the COVID-19 lockdown, she was drinking alcohol every single night and even — gasp — eating carbs. In an interview with The Mirror, the 48-year-old confessed that the stressful times caused her to go "totally off the rails" and abandon her ultra-healthy lifestyle.
Earlier this year, Paltrow shared a blog post detailing her experience with contracting COVID-19 and the lingering side effects she struggled with. She noted that she was dealing with "some long-tail fatigue and brain fog" and that she "had some tests done that showed really high levels of inflammation in my body." The actress then sought treatment from a "functional medical practitioner" who put her on a keto and plant-based diet, which included fasting and drinking alcohol-free cocktails.
"Everything I'm doing feels good, like a gift to my body," she wrote in the blog post. "I have energy, I'm working out in the mornings, and I'm doing an infrared sauna as often as I can, all in service of healing." Paltrow received criticism for sharing what some medical professionals called "misinformation" about healing from the COVID-19 virus (via BBC News).
The actress revealed she drank whiskey 'seven nights a week'
However, it seems that Gwyneth Paltrow's new health regimen didn't last long. In her interview with The Mirror, she said, "I was drinking seven nights a week and making pasta and eating bread. I went totally off the rails." She continued: "I mean, who drinks multiple drinks seven nights a week? Like that's not healthy. I love whiskey and I make this fantastic drink called the Buster Paltrow, which I named after my grandfather who loved whiskey sours."
Paltrow also shared the exact recipe she was whipping up every night. "It's this great quinoa whiskey from this distillery in Tennessee with maple syrup and lemon juice," she said. "It's just heaven. I would have two of those every night of quarantine." The actress also reportedly told the outlet that she missed her old habit of smoking cigarettes and was tempted to indulge with her cocktails.
Though it's somewhat shocking that a health enthusiast like Paltrow would go "off the rails," she's certainly not alone. According to a 2020 study published by the JAMA Network Open, "alcohol consumption among adults increased by 14% from 2019 to 2020." The study also noted that "women, in particular, exhibited a 41% increase in alcohol consumption over a 2019 baseline."
