The Truth About Kylie Jenner's Skincare Routine
A beloved member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Kylie Jenner is an aficionado of cosmetics and skincare products. Although she's known for posting glam pictures, even she scaled down her beauty routine during quarantine. Exchanging lash extensions for eye cream and heavy bronzer for vitamin C serum, Jenner knows that "skincare and make-up go hand in hand," as she wrote in an Instagram post in 2019.
After launching her own makeup line, Kylie Cosmetics, in 2015, Stormi Webster's mom embraced the world of skincare in 2019 with Kylie Skin. Featuring everything from face washes, to moisturizers, facial scrubs, eye creams and serums, Kylie Skin has allowed Jenner to share her personal routine with her 227 million Instagram followers.
Jenner is quite vocal about her skincare routine, and we know she's come to rely on Kylie Skin even more in the years following its launch. Yes, Kylie Skin not only remains Jenner-approved, but also Jenner's absolute favorite.
Kylie Jenner's guide to a fresh face
In a YouTube video for her own YouTube channel, Kylie Jenner starts off her routine by removing her makeup and applying one pump of Kylie Skin Foaming Face Wash. After foaming up, she washes it off and pat-dries her face. In Jenner's world, patting is key. Jenner chooses to do this instead of rubbing her face dry to protect her delicate skin (via StyleCaster). "I used to dry my face really harsh," she admitted. She followed up with her Walnut Face Scrub and then her Vanilla Milk Toner, perfect for removing the last of her makeup and prepping her skin for the incoming serums.
After one to two pumps of Vitamin C Serum, Jenner's skin is filled with antioxidants to brighten her complexion, per the influencer's YouTube video. "Right when you put it on, it immediately sinks into your skin," she explained. "That's what I love about it."
Jenner then moisturizes her face with the simply named Face Moisturizer. This, she said, is the perfect base for her makeup. With no added fragrance, the moisturizer is a good fit for those with sensitive skin (via Glamour).
Kylie Skin faced backlash
Is it really a celebrity skincare line if it doesn't start a controversy? After Kylie Jenner released the teaser video for Kylie Skin, fans took to Twitter to criticize the Walnut Face Scrub for being a harsh product. Although Jenner no longer eats nuts, her face scrub uses powdered walnut shells as an exfoliant. While Jenner only scrubs two to three times per week, and always with a damp face, she was criticized for its harsh ingredients. "It really is the secret recipe to soft, delicious skin," she said in her YouTube video.
Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner and cosmetic chemist Jim Hammer both told Us Weekly that the uproar may be a little exaggerated. Although some fans likened the scrub's abrasiveness to St. Ives Apricot Fresh Skin Scrub, "advances in cosmetic formulation can make a huge difference in the effectiveness and safety of an ingredient," Zeichner explained. "Seems like there's an awful lot of hysteria here over nothing," added Hammer.
Since Jenner does not recommend the product be used daily, both experts agreed that there were no major overall downsides. But as skincare is incredibly personal to each different skin type, you may want to consult your dermatologist before trying something new.
Kylie Jenner learned the power of eye cream from her sisters
Kylie Jenner's last step in her meticulous routine is the Kylie Skin Eye Cream. "My sisters taught me at a really young age to wear eye cream," the star admitted in her YouTube video. Jenner believes it's never too early to start protecting the delicate skin beneath her eyes. "It's just a good preventative to keep your [under] eyes hydrated and moisturized," she said in the video. Jenner purposefully designed the eye cream with an application tip so she and others wouldn't have to use their fingers to apply. "Sometimes I don't want to put on eye cream at night," she continued. "This makes it super easy for me."
While the Kylie Skin line has now expanded to include multiple moisturizers and eye creams, Jenner remains steady in her routine. Throughout the lockdown in 2020, Jenner took a break from makeup and relied on her skincare routine to rejuvenate her skin (via Refinery29). Posting bare-faced selfies on Instagram, Jenner reminded us that, after all, the key to happy and healthy skin is not necessarily makeup, but skincare.
