The Truth About Colman Domingo
There's no doubt Colman Domingo has a natural talent for acting, but did you know he's also a writer and director? That's right! Domingo is a triple-threat: He's an award-winning American actor, playwright, and director (via Empire). While some may know Domingo as Victor Strand on the "Fear of the Walking Dead" or as Cutler (his recent role in the Oscar-nominated "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"), long-time fans know him as a Broadway star.
Domingo made his Broadway debut in Lisa Kron's "Well" in 2006 (via Broadway World). One year later, he became a part of the original casts of "Passing Strange" and "The Scottsboro Boys," for which he earned a Tony nomination for his portrayal of Mr. Bones (via Playbill). "I can tell you this: That show ["Passing Strange"] changed my life," Domingo said in an interview with AV Club. "Everything about the show, I felt like it was written for me—to play a German performance artist, a Dutch nudist, a choir director. I'm like, 'Only I can play that!'" At the time, Domingo was trying to come to terms with the death of his mother. "If I didn't have this piece of art that was going to help me wrestle, transform, and deal with my grief, I don't know where I would be," Domingo added.
Colman Domingo is booked and busy
In addition to appearing in a number of TV series, films (including "The Butler," "Selma," and "If Beale Street Could Talk"), and on-stage performances (via IMDb), Domingo has written a few award-winning plays and musicals, including "Dot." "Out of all of the things I've written, Dot was the quickest from first thoughts to full production," Domingo said in an interview with Interview magazine. "I started writing on set and then, when we were done, I went up to the New York Theatre Workshop for a week. You give me a week and three meals a day and I'll finish a play," Domingo continued. "So I did that and the first draft was done and that was under nine months, which is really fast for a playwright and for a new play."
Now, according to Domingo's website, he's writing a new musical for The Young Vic in London/ Concord Music and hosting Season 3 of his series, "Bottomless Brunch at Colman's."
