The Truth About Kyle Chrisley's Mental Health Struggle
Kyle Chrisley has struggled with his mental health throughout his life. It took him to his darkest place in the fall of 2019, when he attempted to take his own life.
In a photo shared to Todd Chrisley's Instagram account, his eldest son is seen lying in a hospital bed with his family is around him. In the caption, the father of five wrote, "NOT TODAY SATAN, NOT TODAY... God shows up and shows out , now won't he do it ? Kyle is great and we are back to the grind ..."
Kyle later opened up about the circumstances around his hospitalization on the family podcast, Chrisley Confessions. "I take medication and I had a bad side effect to it, and I tried to take my own life," he revealed, per E! News. 'With the meds, I got all kinds of crazy thinking going on."
While he didn't explain what kind of medication he was taking, the reality star noted that "suicidal tendencies" were listed among its side effects. Kyle went on to explain that he hasn't felt that way since getting on a different medication and was optimistic he was back on track.
Todd has talked candidly about Kyle's ups and downs
Todd Chrisley has been there through his son Kyle Chrisley's struggles with both his mental health and addiction. He's also been open about what that looks like publicly. "Kyle is bipolar and normally, people that are bipolar, they seek out a way to self-medicate," Todd told E! News in 2014,"which is what Kyle has done since he's been young."
As a result of his struggles, Kyle's daughter Chloe Chrisley has lived with Todd and wife Julie Chrisley since she was one year old, after Kyle was arrested for assault (per The Sun).
Kyle touched on the matter in a 2019 Facebook post about Todd and Julie's indictment for tax evasion. In the post, he explains his own previous estrangement from the family and why he's taking back comments he's made about his dad in the past. "My mom and dad raised me," Kyle wrote. "I haven't been the best dad to Chloe."
"I've had a problem with drugs, I've acted completely ridiculous, and through all that they have stood by my side," he wrote in part (per Pop Culture). "9 months ago I went to my dad with an apology. His words were 'I love you always, and you are forgiven' and just like that I was welcomed back into his life with open arms. I will be forever grateful for his love [and] graciousness."
