The Real Reason Martha Stewart Never Hosted SNL

Martha Stewart has created a multimillion-dollar empire for herself that includes her own TV shows, books, magazines, and even a media company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (via Investopedia). You'd assume with a $400 million net worth, she'd be living life with little regrets, but there seems to be one thing missing from her resume that the media mogul can't seem to shake. According to Harper's BazaarStewart's "only big regret" is not being able to host Saturday Night Live.

The TV personality was asked to host NBC's sketch comedy show, but had to turn it down due to her probation officer not giving her the time to commit to the show. That's one thing she wishes she could have on her resume. As you may remember, Stewart was sentenced to spend five months in federal prison, followed by two years of home confinement and probation for multiple felony charges back in 2004 (via Today). It was during those probation years that Stewart missed out on her comedy dream.

Despite not hosting the show, Martha Stewart has been parodied on 'SNL' for years

While she hasn't ever graced the Studio 8H stage as host, Martha Stewart is no stranger to Saturday Night Live. The businesswoman has been impersonated on the show for years. Out of all the impersonations, the most notorious one was back in the 1990s and early 2000s, when SNL cast member Ana Gasteyer played Stewart in sketches parodying her Martha Stewart Living show. In 2014, Gasteyer finally apologized to Stewart for her impersonations when both appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Stewart joked that the apology came "seven years too late," but she really actually loved the sketches (via Entertainment Weekly).

One of the most recent Martha Stewart impersonations on SNL was back in 2013, when Kate McKinnon appeared as the mogul in a Match.com commercial (via YouTube). That means it's been about eight years since the last Stewart appearance on the show. Perhaps the next one could be her finally making her hosting debut and fulfilling that career dream. Nick Jonas is the latest to host, and the singer will be pulling double duty as musical guest on the February 27, 2021, episode (via Vulture). Right now, there is no word on the rest of Season 46 and who will be hosting, so you never know. Stewart can always keep her fingers crossed that Lorne Michaels will be giving her that phone call.
