Fans Aren't Thrilled About The Mr. And Mrs. Smith Reboot. Here's Why
If you're eagerly awaiting the next season of Atlanta to come out or obsessively binging Fleabag over and over, we have good news for you: your two favorite showrunners are coming together to remake one of our favorite movies into a series. Coming to Amazon in 2022, Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are reuniting for a Mr + Mrs Smith TV series. This will be the pair's first time working together again since their human/robot friendship/romantic relationship in Solo: A Star Wars Story, where Glover, a.k.a Childish Gambino, played the famous smuggler Lando Calrissian, and Waller-Bridge, the sassy droid L3-37.
Due to the enormous success that their shows, Atlanta and Fleabag, achieved (via IndieWire), it's hard to believe that this remake and this pairing won't be absolutely fantastic – or at the very least, worth the watch. That being said, not everyone seems to agree. Indeed, some fans are worried that Gambino and Waller-Bridge make too much of an odd pair.
Their past work would suggest they're capable of handling this remake
It wouldn't be too odd to imagine Waller-Bridge playing a gun-wielding assassin, as some of her most recent work involved writing the script for Daniel Craig's final installment as the renowned James Bond in No Time to Die (via BBC). And as for Glover, his work has been so incredibly varied throughout his career that it would be hard to believe that he couldn't succeed at a project such as this one. According to FX, "Donald is a remarkable artist, effortlessly shifting from actor to writer, producer, director and musician to create one amazing project after another" (via comicbook.com).
But despite their individual successful careers, people on Twitter seem to worry that they won't have the right chemistry to pull off playing the infamous Smiths. The original 2005 film starred Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, which many cite as the start of their inevitable coming together and marriage. It was roughly only a year after the release of the film that the two were spotted on vacation together, occurring very shortly after Pitt had divorced Jennifer Aniston (via Insider).
Here's why people think Glover and Waller-Bridge might not be well-suited for this role
What made the original Mr. & Mrs. Smith so iconic was, frankly, the incredibly sexual chemistry between Jolie and Pitt – it's no surprise that they became an item so shortly after. One social media user tweeted this sentiment, writing, "The entire reason Mr & Mrs Smith is a memorable movie is because Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were ridiculously hot in it and had amazing chemistry. I don't see it happening for this version. Donald Glover doesn't really sell sex to me." Another skeptic wrote simply (via Twitter), "The most awkward coupling for Mr & Mrs Smith reboot."
But Glover and Waller-Bridge have worked together before and had what many people believed to be fantastic chemistry, despite the latter having been a droid. They've also both been publicly supportive of each other's careers and massive successes.
Only time will tell what these two will bring to the small screen; will they attempt to take on the OG sexy legacy left by Jolie and Pitt, or will they create their own unique spin on the Smiths?
