Shakira Reveals Her Brand-New Look

There is perhaps no one in the world who has more famous hips than singer-songwriter Shakira, who broke through in the United States thanks to her 2006 hit "Hips Don't Lie." But this week, the singer is making headlines with... her hair.

The Colombian-born singer turned heads (or at least webpages) on Friday when she posted a picture of herself to Instagram donning long, dyed red locks, with the word "Voila" transcribed over it and an accompanying caption that read the same thing. This marks quite the change for Shakira, who just even a few weeks ago was sporting a dark blond hair color. However, fans were clearly into the makeover, leaving various comments like "TE AMO" and "PERFEITA."

Longtime Shakira fans know that this isn't the first time she's played around with her hair color. In fact, some are speculating that it's a throwback to the earliest days of the singer's career, a la the cover of her 2002 album Grandes Exitos and her MTV Unplugged performance in 1999 (via People).

Shakira comes full circle

It makes sense that now that Shakira is embarking on a different phase of her career, she'd throw it back to the (sort of) beginning to help promote her new song with the Black Eyed Peas, "Girl Like Me." The song, which was released in June but just saw its music video premiere in December, has actually been in the works since 2008.

"Shakira and I worked on 'Girl Like Me' in 2008," said will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas. "I'm so happy it's out in the world. I've always loved the melody, and I'm so happy Shakira and I worked together to release the song and made a video in 2020 for the world to hear and see" (via Billboard). As of late January, the video had already racked up 200 million views on YouTube, with the song landing Shakira on Billboard's Global 200 chart for the first time ever (via People).

And that's not the only big career news afoot for Shakira: In December she sold the music publishing rights of all 145 of her tracks to Hipgnosis Songs Fund Limited (via People). While Shakira kicked off 2020 with an epic Super Bowl performance, it seems like she's starting 2021 off just as strong.
