What You Need To Know About Silicone Sheet Masks

When it comes to skincare, sheet masks are all the rage these days. It makes sense why — in addition to the purported benefits, applying a sheet mask can help you relax. Dr. Harold Lancer, dermatologist to stars such as Victoria Beckham, explained to The Cut that there are numerous reasons why using sheet masks can help your skin.

"Sheet masks are great because it allows the skin to 'rest' while it is saturated in hydrating, brightening, or anti-aging ingredients and giving an extra boost to your current skin routine when you need it the most."

But that doesn't mean that traditional sheet masks are amazing across the board. Dermatologist Shereene Idris told Women's Health that while many of these masks are great for the skin, the packaging they arrive in is often less than environmentally-friendly.

"I like [face masks] to 'treat' myself every once in a while because the experience can be soothing and calming, but from a practical standpoint, I am not a fan. The waste that comes through just with the packaging alone, and the fact that the masks themselves are usually not biodegradable, [is a problem]."

The truth about silicone sheet masks

Another problem with many sheet masks is the material of the mask itself. Traditional sheet masks are usually made of natural fibers like cotton, which isn't always problematic on its own, but when this material is made into a mask, it's typically soaked in a serum that leaves behind residue and makes it impossible for the masks to break down in the garbage.

Enter reusable silicone sheet masks! Eco concerns aside, there's another reason to switch to silicone sheet masks: they create an optimal environment for your skin. Actress Jessica Alba, who helms The Honest Company, explained to Harper's BAZAAR that silicone is where it's at. "Silicone does not absorb the product and creates a closed environment—it is designed to minimize evaporation. This helps lock in all the good stuff!"

Alba isn't the only one who loves silicone sheet masks. Charlotte Palermino, CEO of skincare company Dieux — which creates reusable under-eye masks — echoed her enthusiasm while speaking to Yahoo! Style. "When looking at durable and tested materials, medical-grade silicone kept coming up. It's well-tested in working with scarring (particularly around hydration) and doesn't degrade but also, it's durable."
