The Truth About Dave McCary's SNL Proposal To Emma Stone
Writer and comedian Dave McCrary is far from the first SNL staffer to find love within the hallowed halls of 30 Rockefeller Plaza (hello, Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson) but he might be the first to propose marriage there (via Insider and Page Six).
McCrary first met his now fiancée, actress Emma Stone, when the starlet hosted the show in December 2016 and appeared in the "Wells for Boys" sketch — considered by many one of the best of the season — and directed by McCrary.
Naturally, we've come to expect celebrity engagements to be lavish and opulent, replete with trips to remote islands and private jets. But despite the fact that McCrary was proposing marriage to an Oscar-winning, blockbuster-starring, actress, he still opted for the low-key route: asking for Stone's hand in marriage at the place they first met, 30 Rock.
"No one was there and by all accounts, it was very romantic," a source told Page Six of his January 2019 proposal.
A very un-Hollywood courtship
But while the decision for such a low-key proposal might come in contrast to how most celebrities pop the question, it's perfectly in step with how McCrary and Stone have conducted their almost four-year relationship.
Although the two began dating in June 2017 (six months after Stone's SNL hosting gig), McCrary and Stone didn't make their first public appearance together until January 2019 at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (via Vogue). Instead, they mostly opted for events like Stone's roller-skating birthday bash and double dating with Taylor Swift and her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn (via Us Weekly).
In fact, when McCrary and Stone announced their engagement, it was done so simply via McCrary's Instagram, with McCrary and Stone smiling as Stone held her bejeweled ring finger up to the camera. The two were initially supposed to wed in March of 2020, but when COVID-19 hit, they instead opted for a small Los Angeles ceremony in September of that year (via Page Six). News of their nuptials, of course, only came to light once Stone was spotted wearing a wedding band instead of a wedding ring during a video appearance alongside Reese Witherspoon (via People).
And now, there's even more good news for the McCrary-Stone family: Stone is reportedly pregnant with their first child (via E! Online) and, given Stone and McCrary's preference for keeping this private, we look forward to learning their soon-to-be-born child's name sometime after they start kindergarten.
