Celebrities Who Thoroughly Enjoyed Kissing Each Other On Screen
Working alongside some of the most attractive people in Hollywood, being in close quarters, and performing kissing scenes could be difficult for anyone. For some celebrities, working on a film or TV show set made it near impossible for them not to fall for their co-stars. Such was the case for Kristen Stewart, who fell for Robert Pattinson while filming Twilight. Or Kit Harrington, who fell for his co-star Rose Leslie during a season of filming in Iceland for Game of Thrones.
For others, the experience has created long-lasting friendships or serves as a great experience. Some have gone on to date (and then break up), while others have married and divorced like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. And a few are still happily married to this day! Curious about which stars enjoyed smooching their co-stars? These are celebrities that thoroughly enjoyed kissing each other — on and, in some cases, off set.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith was the catalyst for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's relationship
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt infamously fell in love on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Sounds romantic, right? Jolie acknowledged this in an interview for The New York Times, in which she said, "Not a lot of people get to see a movie where their parents fell in love."
At first, Jolie and Pitt had kept quiet about the rumors, particularly because Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston at the time. But after filming ended, Aniston and Pitt announced their separation, and soon a 60-page spread called "Domestic Bliss" came out, just about confirming the couple. Falling in love wasn't planned. Jolie, in an interview with Vogue in which she mentioned meeting Pitt, explained (via People), "And so we were both living, I suppose, very full lives. ... I think we were the last two people who were looking for a relationship."
While Brangelina wouldn't last, it's clear Jolie and Pitt enjoyed kissing each other more than most co-stars if it led to a relationship.
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart won MTV Awards' Best Kiss four years in a row
Twilight fans who love Bella Swan and Edward Cullen were ecstatic to learn about the real-life relationship between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. For them, it was a dream come true, and Pattinson and Stewart had no problem playing it up on stage for four consecutive MTV Movie & TV Award shows when they won best kiss for their work in the Twilight series.
Stewart and Pattinson were always quiet about the relationship while they dated. Like in one interview with Pattinson on The Late Show with David Letterman, where he played coy when asked the question of their dating status. But in a 2019 interview with Howard Stern, Stewart opened up about the relationship. "I've actually never been allowed to just say what happened," she shared, noting that sparks immediately flew when they auditioned. "Me and Rob were a little older, and it was just like ga-gung," she explained.
Unfortunately, the couple broke up after Stewart was photographed kissing Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. Still, sparks must have flown when Stewart and Pattinson kissed for the Twilight cameras.
Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield got caught up in romance while filming The Amazing Spider-Man
The love story between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man transcended to the actors' real lives. When Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield met on set, there was just immediate chemistry. Even Ellen DeGeneres noticed during an interview on her show. A clip of the two kissing in the film prompted her to ask, "Do y'all rehearse?" It was clear the pair enjoyed kissing, on set and off.
Stone and Garfield were not shy about praising one another, with Garfield talking to MTV News about their on and off-screen chemistry that could be felt as early as Stone's screen test. "We got on really well as people, in between [takes]," Garfield said. "That was the fun stuff: In between, we'd just mess around, and I felt, 'Ah, this is different," he noted.
Stone said the same in an interview with ABC News about working alongside her co-star and boyfriend. "Well, I mean, it's just, it's like a dream to work with him," she said. "He's also a remarkable human being. I love him very much," she continued.
Zendaya was Zac Efron's best kiss with a co-star
In a 2017 interview with Filmweb, Zac Efron and Zendaya promoted The Greatest Showman, in which they play love interests. The interviewer, Benjamin Brekken, commented on Efron's lengthy CV of leading lady kisses. But when asked specifically about the kiss in The Greatest Showman, Efron said, "This might be my favorite kiss, I think ever," to which even Zendaya looked a bit shocked.
He continued, "Just 'cause it's, at this point for these characters, so built up, the tension between them is so strong. Like literally just a glance between them is electric." A big revelation, considering some of Efron's other co-stars he's kissed in his films include the lovely Lily Collins, ex-girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens, and even Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
But Zendaya wanted to make something clear, and she had a chance on Live With Kelly and Ryan. "Our characters are these forbidden love characters, right? ... So at the end, when they do get to actually kiss, it's a huge moment," she said. Kissing was special for them because of the pay off, and clearly they really enjoyed it.
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton enjoyed a whirlwind romance on the set of Cleopatra
On the set of Cleopatra, Elizabeth Taylor met co-star Richard Burton, and she was determined not to fall in love with him, a known womanizer who was also married to Sybil Christopher. Taylor was still married to Eddie Fisher at the time, but after their divorce in 1964, she married Burton just nine days later, as noted by People.
The relationship on set between the two actors was passionate. From their on-screen kiss going on for much longer than it had to to drunk screaming matches between the two (via Biography), the couple was as volatile as they were in love. The two couldn't keep their hands or lips off of each other in between takes. In an excerpt from her book (via People), Taylor wrote, "When I saw him on the set of Cleopatra, I fell in love and I have loved him ever since..." Taylor even shared she was still in love with him up until the day he died. "I think he still loved me, too,” she told Vogue (via The Boston Globe).
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have fond memories of filming Titanic
Fans of Rose and Jack's epic love story from the 1998 film Titanic have held out hope that the two actors who played them would finally realize their love for each other. But the duo are great friends, always supporting the other, like in Kate Winslet's reaction when Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his Oscar. Or when she told him how much she loved him during her acceptance speech for Best Actress for Revolutionary Road. DiCaprio even walked Winslet down the aisle when she married Ned Rocknroll, according to Us Weekly.
But their friendship all started with Titanic. On The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004, DiCaprio talked about his favorite leading lady kiss. "I'm just going to go with Kate Winslet, a good ole' classic. That's my girl," he said while clapping along with the audience.
They also did some kissing in another film together, Revolutionary Road. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight from 1997, DiCaprio talked about his chemistry with Winslet during the filming of Titanic: "Our chemistry sort of just naturally happened, I think, on screen. We just like each other as people."
Nina Dobrev must have liked kissing this Vampire Diaries co-star since they dated
In 2011, rumors swirled around Nina Dobrev, who starred in the hit CW drama The Vampire Diaries, and her co-star Ian Somerholder, with whom she had an on-screen romance. In a feature written by Teen Vogue about the actress, Dobrev addressed the gossip when asked about what happened off-screen. "We expected the rumors," she says. "A lot of people who work together end up dating, so it wouldn't be unusual, but I've never dated anyone I've worked with."
But by 2012, in an interview with Seventeen magazine, Dobrev said, "The first time I was on the cover of Seventeen, the cover line said 'Nina: Why she wouldn't date any of her co-stars.' And then cut to two years later..." Yep, cut to two years later and she was dating Somerhalder.
Their breakup happened after three years, while their on-screen characters were still dating. But don't worry, it wasn't awkward or anything, as they joked about it after winning the award for favorite on-screen chemistry at the People's Choice Awards in 2014. Dobrev was all smiles when Somerhalder sweetly kissed her cheek.
Sparks flew for Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively on the set of Green Lantern
Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively didn't start dating on the set of Green Lantern, but the chemistry was palpable from the start between the superhero and his love interest in the film. As friends in real life, the actors even went on a double date with other people. During an interview with EW Radio, Reynolds said, "That was the most awkward date for their respective probably because we were just like fireworks coming across."
But the actors weren't single during filming. Reynolds was married to Scarlett Johansson, and Lively was dating Penn Badgley, so kissing was limited to on set, until they broke up with their partners and reconnected as friends first.
Green Lantern was an important moment in Lively's life. "I knew right away that we would be together forever, and that he would be mine. That was it," she said in an interview with AsiaOne (via Elite Daily). The couple is still married and has since gone on to have three children together — James, Inez, and Betty, and it all started from that first kiss in the film.
Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are no strangers to kissing on screen
"I've never fallen in love with someone I'm working with," Penélope Cruz once said about her previous relationships for The Telegraph in 2008. "It's always been afterwards." But that changed when Cruz starred alongside Javier Bardem, her now husband.
O, The Oprah Magazine reported they met while making their first film together, Jamón Jamón, but they didn't officially get together until after their film Vicky Cristina Barcelona. They then got married two years after that in 2010, according to Hello! magazine. In an interview with GQ (via Hello!), Bardem talked about his wife, saying, "Oh, boy. She has that feistiness. There are those scenes [in Vicky Cristina Barcelona] where we are arguing...I had to wonder, 'Do I really want this?'"
Apparently, Bardem enjoys kissing his wife in films as much as he does at home. They have since filmed other projects together like The Counselor and Loving Pablo. For Marie Claire, Cruz was asked about working with her husband. "On the one hand, it's easier because you know that person, he knows you, and the way you work is very similar," she said.
Kit Harrington fell in love with Rose Leslie while filming steamy scenes for Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones became a hit when it debuted in 2011. For two of its stars, Kit Harrington and Rose Leslie, the show was the beginning of their relationship. In Season 2, Jon Snow is introduced to Ygritte, where they develop an on-screen romance. Soon, there were rumors that they were kissing off-screen too.
The actors were extremely private about their personal lives and potential romance. In an interview with The Evening Standard, Harrington addressed the rumors, stating clearly that they were not dating: "All rumor and myth. Me and Rose [Leslie] are very, very close..." But it seems filming in a new country and kissing your attractive co-star was something they really enjoyed.
Finally the pair went public at the 2016 Olivier Awards, and after, Harrington admitted he fell in love with Leslie while filming Game of Thrones. For Kit Harrington, his best memories were his three weeks spent in Iceland filming the second season "because it was there that I fell in love," he said in an interview with Vogue.
There was chemistry on the set of The Last Song
Miley Cyrus has gone through her feelings of her entire relationship with Liam Hemsworth through her discography. But some may have forgotten that Hemsworth and Cyrus got their start on the set of the Nicholas Sparks movie The Last Song. Sparks flew during their kissing scene, and the rest was history.
When asked about working with Cyrus, Hemsworth told The Dish Rag, "She's amazing. She's, you know, she can sing, dance, and act. So it's incredible. ... We had really good chemistry on screen. Yeah, it worked out." The two continued to refer to each other as just best friends, but one couple-y photoshoot for Teen Vogue said otherwise. Cyrus also told Parade about filming, "The last thing I was expecting to do was to fall in love." Their attraction obviously lent itself to some no-doubt enjoyable kissing scenes.
Unfortunately, Cyrus and Hemsworth later called off an engagement in 2013. They got back together in 2016, married, and then divorced in 2019. The papers were finalized in 2020 (via Glamour).
How Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco felt about kissing on The Big Bang Theory
Leonard and Penny may have started dating in Season 3 of The Big Bang Theory, but Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki were secretly dating before that. They dated during Season 1 and 2 and broke up right before their characters started dating, which Cuoco confirmed on a podcast episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard.
She said on the podcast (via Insider), "We got together and just fell mad for each other for about two years. But then we broke up." This might have been partly because they dated in secret for so long. Cuoco and Galecki had to do a lot more kissing in Season 1 and 3 after they broke up, but it couldn't have been too bad, as they ended on good terms, according to Cuoco. "Moments were really hard, but we have such a love for each other — and we knew we weren't destined to be together — that we accepted it and said, 'Look, if we ever break up, we will be professional,'" she shared with CBS Watch Magazine (via New York Daily News).
Eventually their characters ended up getting married in the show.
Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes started dating after starring in their first film together
Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes were great friends before their film The Place Beyond the Pines, but it was that film that started it all. The pair were soon spotted snuggling up at Disneyland. A source told Us Weekly, "They were very playful. Eva was skipping around like a little girl... She would lean into him and she held his arm the entire time." Surely this led to some pretty fun kissing scenes.
While on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Mendes declined to comment on Gosling or their rumored child. Finally in 2014, Eva's pregnancy was confirmed by Us Weekly. Since then, the couple had another child. In an interview with O, The Oprah Magazine, Mendes talked about the film Lost River that Gosling directed and her time working with him in The Place Beyond the Pines. "The two times we've collaborated, him and I, have been the two best experiences in my career. There's such special work in The Place Beyond the Pines," she said. Mendes continued, "I would love to either act opposite him again or be directed by him at some point."
