Demi Lovato dated Cody Linley back in the day
Demi Lovato's first boyfriend, at least that we know about, was Hannah Montana star Cody Linley. The pair were known to be an item back in 2008, and, as Linley tells it, they had one date that was especially harrowing. After tending to business in downtown Hollywood, Linley headed over to Lovato's house to pick her up. "After my audition, my car broke down in like the worst place," he recalled in an interview with Seventeen. That's how Linley ended up in a Jack in the Box parking lot trying to fix his ride.
Fortunately, he was able to get the car running again, so he tardily picked up Lovato to head to dinner — and the vehicle started acting up again. "So I had to stop the car and get out," he continued. "Demi was really sweet. She held the light for me and put in her car repair advice."
Fortunately, Lovato and Linley did eventually make it to the steak restaurant for their date. And Linley had his car repaired properly the next day.
Did Demi Lovato write "Catch Me" about Alex DeLeon?
Demi Lovato's next public relationship was with The Cab musician Alex DeLeon, according to PopSugar. The couple reportedly were together for about a year from 2008 to 2009, after Lovato and Cody Linley halted their youthful romance. Hey, when you're that young — Lovato was only 16 years old at the time, while DeLeon was just 20 — you don't have to be insanely serious with everyone you date!
However, just because Lovato and DeLeon broke up after a year of dating doesn't mean they didn't have an impact on each other, as Lovato reportedly wrote the song "Catch Me" about DeLeon alone in her hotel room. "Those songs mean more to me than when we've got two weeks to finish an album and I'm with three different writers," she revealed in a chat with The New York Times.
DeLeon went on to get engaged to model Josephine Skriver, as noted by People. However, the couple postponed their 2020 nuptials, as many did that year.
Demi Lovato and Trace Cyrus tried to make it work
After her breakup with Alex DeLeon, Demi Lovato was next romantically linked to musician Trace Cyrus, brother of the famous Miley Cyrus. And while they were both rather fond of each other, Lovato and Cyrus weren't quite able to stay together. "Demi is one of my good friends and I definitely became very, very close with her in the past few months, and it's something I really wanted to make work," Cyrus explained to People. "But unfortunately, we both have very busy schedules." Given that they're both touring musicians, that's totally understandable.
Fortunately, Lovato and Cyrus were able to remain friends after their split, and they only had kind things to say about the other. "Every time I hung out with that girl or talked on the phone with her, it was amazing," Cyrus continued. "She's someone I can totally relate to."
Cyrus did add that their age difference — they're four years apart — also contributed to his breakup with Lovato. "Maybe when she's older and we've both matured, we'll be looking for the same thing and it can work out," he added. That never did happen, though, and many fans stopped hearing about Trace Cyrus completely.
Demi Lovato called Joe Jonas her best friend
Love was in the air on the set of Camp Rock 2 back in 2010. That's when Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas started dating, after playing love interests in the franchise. At the time, Lovato sounded completely smitten with Jonas. "He's my best friend and he's incredible," she gushed on The Billy Bush Show (via Access). "He's a complete gentleman, he takes me to the most amazing places... he's perfect!" Talk about high praise!
For as electric as things were between Jonas and Lovato, the pair split up after just a few months of dating. "Demi and I knew going into our romantic relationship that it may not be an easy one," Jonas explained in an interview with Us Weekly, noting, "It was my choice to breakup, but I love her as a friend."
If Lovato was heartbroken or upset, all of that eventually dissipated, as the pair have remained friends over the years.
Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama were together for six years
When it comes to serious relationships, you'd be hard-pressed to argue that Demi Lovato's first wasn't with actor Wilmer Valderrama. The pair got together just after Lovato's 18th birthday, after she first went to rehab — despite what the haters had to say. "People told him, 'You should probably leave. She's on a spiral, and you're going to be sucked down with it,'" Lovato confessed to Cosmopolitan. "But he was like, 'I'm not leaving. This is somebody I really care about.'"
As Lovato tells it, the only time the couple had issues were when she wasn't doing well. "The only times we ever broke up were when I was relapsing, whether it was drugs or in a bad place and rebelling against everybody," she continued.
Lovato and Valderrama were together for a long time — six years, to be exact — before they made the decision to part ways. "This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more that anything that we are better as best friends," Lovato wrote on Instagram (via Page Six).
Demi Lovato and Odell Beckham Jr. dated for a while
After Demi Lovato split from Wilmer Valderrama, the first person she was romantically connected to was football player Odell Beckham Jr. in July of 2016. According to Page Six, the musician and the athlete met for dinner at Hunt & Fish Club, an exclusive Los Angeles restaurant. "Odell came in around 11 p.m. alone, then Demi discreetly arrived about 10 minutes later," a source told the outlet. "They sat in a corner booth, and it definitely looked like a date. They looked very friendly and stayed until around 1:30 a.m."
Given that Lovato was just out of a long-term relationship, it seemed no one — including Beckham — was expecting anything serious. "They are just hanging out now and it all is very fresh," another source told E! News. "Odell is aware that he may be a rebound, but he is ok with just chilling and getting to know her."
If anything else happened, we're not aware of it, but these two definitely had their minute.
Demi Lovato and Luke Rockhold weren't very serious
While Demi Lovato was spotted on what appeared to be a date with Odell Beckham Jr. in July of 2016, her main squeeze that year was UFC fighter Luke Rockhold. The pair spent time together at a UFC title match in November of 2016, as noted by Page Six.
Lovato and Rockhold both posted about attending the event together on social media the next day, each sharing the same picture. This was on the heels of getting matching finger tattoos together several months prior in August of 2016. Hey, matching tattoos equals serious, yes?
Well, maybe not so much in this case. While Lovato and Rockhold were seemingly super into one another, they ended up calling it quits just after the new year in 2017, according to TMZ. After that, Lovato had her sights set on someone new, though he was just as hunky as Rockhold. Demi Lovato has had a stunning transformation over the years and part of that seems to be figuring out what — and who — she wants.
Demi Lovato hooked up with Guilherme "Bomba" Vasconcelos
While Demi Lovato wasn't exactly serious about Luke Rockhold, even though the singer was definitely fond of him, she clearly enjoyed hooking up with an MMA fighter. At least, it certainly appears that way, as Lovato's next sweetie was MMA pro fighter Guilherme "Bomba" Vasconcelos, as noted by Us Weekly. "Demi's still looking to meet new guys," a source told the magazine, adding that the singer is "just having fun." There's nothing wrong with that, especially when you're fresh out of a long relationship!
But just as Lovato wasn't ready to settle down and start a family with Rockhold, she also wasn't exactly gunning to become Mrs. Vasconcelos, either. To that end, the two called it quits for good in May of 2017, as noted by People. "It wasn't a dramatic split," an insider told the magazine. "Bomba is a good guy, but the relationship just ran its course." We've all been there — just glad it wasn't a messy breakup.
Demi Lovato dated Henry Levy for a few months
While Demi Lovato clearly enjoyed getting cozy with MMA fighters, in 2018, she was seen cuddling up to someone entirely different. The new beau? Lovato was spotted spending time with fashion designer Henry Levy. "Demi looked great and so happy to be out," an insider revealed n a chat with E! News. "There wasn't any PDA or romantic gestures, but she was smiling and laughing throughout dinner." That's what we love to hear!
One major thing that Lovato and Levy had in common, other than their interest in fashion, is their shared commitment to sobriety. "He had always appreciated her for wearing his clothes early on in his career," another source shared. "Friends are hopeful he and Demi are working on their sobriety together."
Perhaps not surprisingly, Lovato and Levy weren't meant to be, as they ended their romantic relationship in March of 2019, according to People.
Demi Lovato and Mike Johnson shared some smooches
If you're looking to hook up with some seriously attractive people, chances are you'll find someone you're fond of somewhere in Bachelor Nation. At least, Demi Lovato sure did, as she was definitely smooching Bachelorette star Mike Johnson in 2019. "We've gone on more than one date," he explained on an episode of The Ben & Ashley I Almost Famous podcast. "She kisses really well." We don't doubt that one bit!
Additionally, it sounds like Johnson didn't have to work hard to woo Lovato, as he said that she was the one who made the first move. "She definitely was the aggressor, you know, I find it incredibly sexy," he continued. He added that he also likes her tattoos and that she even has more ink than he does.
According to People, Lovato first made her affections for Johnson known in an Instagram Story at the beginning of Hannah Brown's season of The Bachelorette. And while nothing serious ever manifested between the pair, it sounds like it was fun while it lasted.
Demi Lovato and Austin Wilson dated for several months
On the heels of her brief romance with Mike Johnson, Demi Lovato got Instagram official with model Austin Wilson in November of 2019. "Demi and Austin have been friends for some time and started dating a little while ago," an insider revealed to People. "They're enjoying spending time together and getting to know each other better." It seems that Lovato finally dated someone with more tattoos than her!
However, whatever was between Lovato and Wilson was short-lived, as the couple decided to part ways just months after getting together. The reason for the split? "She's concentrating on herself and her work right now, as well as focusing on her relationship with God," another source explained. "She's excited for what this next chapter in 2020 will bring."
While it's unclear if there's any acrimony between the former lovers, they both deleted all of the Instagram photos they took together. In the age of social media, that's definitely an indication of severance, at the very least.
Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich called off their engagement
Three months after calling it quits with Austin Wilson, fans of Demi Lovato began to suspect that she was in a relationship with Young and the Restless actor Max Ehrich. The duo appeared to be getting flirty on Instagram starting in March of 2020, and they also shared similar posts on more than one occasion (via Us Weekly).
If there was any doubt that Lovato and Ehrich were an item, that was quashed when they announced that they were engaged in July of 2020 (via People). "I've never felt so unconditionally loved by someone in my life (other than my parents) flaws and all," Lovato gushed in a since-deleted Instagram post. "I love you more than a caption could express but I'm ecstatic to start a family and life with you."
While it seemed that Lovato had finally found her forever person, alas, her romance with Ehrich wasn't meant to be. The pair called off the engagement in September of 2020 — which appeared to blindside Ehrich. "Imagine finding out the status of your relationship through a tabloid," he lamented in an Instagram story (via USA Today). Ouch!
