Politicians Who Have Really Gorgeous Husbands
When we think of attractive men in the public eye, our thoughts generally turn towards actors, models, musicians, and other famous celebrities. Not all of the handsome gentlemen out there are caught up in the celebrity sphere, though. Many of them are a lot closer to home and can be found on the arms of senators, governors, and other politicians.
The life of a political husband may not sound quite as glamorous as the life of an A-lister, but these men do play an important role in government. Although they are not elected to public office themselves, they do provide a lot of support to their office-holding husbands and wives and, in some cases, have unofficial duties themselves, which they carry out while also boasting a handsome figure. Here is a closer look at just some of the politicians who have really gorgeous husbands — who knew that the world of politics was so good looking?
Politician Gina Raimondo's husband is proud to be the first gentleman of Rhode Island
Rhode Island governor Gina Raimondo and her dashing husband, Andy Moffit, make quite the attractive couple. Moffit seems incredibly proud of his wife, and he takes his position as the first-ever first gentleman of the state of Rhode Island quite seriously, listing it on his LinkedIn. As first gentleman, Moffit vowed to "focus on improving outdoor recreation opportunities, reducing child hunger rates, and eliminating the stigma of mental health issues in Rhode Island."
Raimondo and Moffit have two children, Ceci and Tommy, per his Twitter bio. As once noted in Moffit's bio on the official Office of the Governor of Rhode Island's website, he works in consulting and is also an adjunct lecturer at Brown University and Harvard Graduate School of Education. Moffitt has a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, graduated from Yale Law School, and has a master's degree from Oxford University, which is where he met his wife.
Kirsten Gillibrand's handsome husband moved to the U.S. for her
When you think of enduring romances, the love stories of U.S. politicians aren't what typically come to mind. Maybe they should be, though, because Kirsten Gillibrand, a senator from New York, and her gorgeous husband, British financier Jonathan Gillibrand, have fought hard to be together in a story worthy of a rom-com. As noted by the Daily Mail, the couple were set up on a blind date in 1999. Jonathan was studying at Columbia, while Kirsten was employed at a law firm. While Jonathan had only intended to stay in the U.S. for a year before going back home, his plans quickly changed after he and Kirsten "hit it off." The couple now has two children together, Theodore and Henry.
Jonathan has been quite supportive of Kirsten's political career, which included a presidential run in 2019. As Kirsten told Vogue, a lot of men aren't supportive of their wives entering the political arena "because it's intense," but Jonathan has always stood by her side, although he hates seeing her "attacked."
Kamala Harris' husband also has a law degree
Thanks to Kamala Harris' presidential run and then her being named as former vice president Joe Biden's running mate, Kamala Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, is one of the better known political husbands out there. While he isn't a politician, the handsome gentleman is, like Harris herself, an attorney who has worked on some pretty high profile cases. Per Business Insider, one of his biggest cases was in the late '90s, when he helped win a $42 million lawsuit over the Taco Bell chihuahua when the fast food chain was sued for allegedly using the character without compensating its creators. Taco Bell was ordered to pay up, but instead sued their advertising agency, claiming they should be responsible. Emhoff successfully defended the agency in that lawsuit, and Taco Bell was found to be solely responsible for compensating the creators of the chihuahua.
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Emhoff and Harris were set up on a blind date in 2013, and they have been happy together ever since. They have no children together, although Harris is a devoted stepmom to Emhoff's children, Cole and Ella, who call her "Momala."
Politician Lisa Murkowski's husband encouraged her to run for office
Deciding to run for office can be quite daunting. Fortunately, Lisa Murkowski had a lot of support in her corner when she decided to enter politics. Her husband, Verne Martell, not only supported her political endeavors but was the one to encourage her to pursue her political dreams. As Murkowski told The New York Times, her husband raised their two sons while she launched her political career.
Murkowski's political career has proven to be quite successful. Per her biography on her website, she served as a state representative from 1999 to 2002, was appointed to the Senate in 2002, elected to a full term two years later, and then won re-election in 2010 and again in 2016.
While the Alaskan senator said that being in politics is often stressful and has impacted her marriage, Martell has stood by her side throughout everything. The couple have been together for decades — a 2016 tweet from the politician commemorated the couple's 29th wedding anniversary.
Nancy Pelosi has been with her husband for decades
California representative and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has had a long career in politics with her husband, Paul Pelosi, at her side. The Pelosis have been together for the better part of a century. They were college sweethearts who tied the knot in 1963 and went on to have four daughters and a son together.
Nancy Pelosi credits her years as a homemaker with preparing her for her later political career. As she told The Washington Post, she "became so energized and efficient in the use of time and willing to delegate." She won office in 1987, as her youngest child began her last year of high school.
Decades later, she is one of the most recognizable politicians in the world, and her gorgeous husband is still at her side although he keeps a low profile. As Paul, a businessman, once explained to The Chronicle (via SFGate), he has "made a conscious effort to not be involved or give the appearance of being involved" in his wife's career.
Politician Kristi Noem and her gorgeous husband have three kids
Kristi Noem kicked off her political career in the South Dakota legislature. She then was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives before being elected the first-ever female governor of South Dakota in 2018. Supporting the politician throughout her history-making moment were her children, Kassidy, Kennedy, and Booker, and her husband, Bryon.
As noted by his biography on the National Governors Association's website, Bryon has his own insurance company and also coaches high school basketball. Bryon Noem is proud to be the very first gentleman of the state of South Dakota. "I am honored to serve beside Kristi," he told the Capital Journal.
Bryon told the Black Hills Pioneer that he and Kristi knew her decision to enter the political arena would be "hard," but that the family "prayed heavily about it" and "sensed" that they were doing what they were meant to do. While it hasn't always been easy, the Noems have stayed strong by putting their family first. "Everything we do, we do together," he said.
Politician Ashley Moody's husband is a special agent with the DEA
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody isn't the only person in her family to have a job with the government. As noted by the Miami Herald, her mother is a lawyer, her father is a judge, and she is also the granddaughter of a judge. Her husband, Justin Duralia, also works for the government as an agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Moody didn't set out to have a career in politics. She started off working for a law firm, but eventually left her job and took a pay cut in order to become a federal prosecutor. It was then that she met and married Duralia. After they were married, she ran for circuit court judge and her political career began.
While Moody is an elected official, she told the Tampa Bay Times that she doesn't actually consider herself a politician. "My life's work has been dedicated to the rule of law," she said.
Gretchen Whitmer and her husband have a beautiful blended family
Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer has a handsome and successful husband in Dr. Marc Mallory. As noted by The Sun, Whitmer's political career was already established when the two tied the knot in 2011. That year, Whitmer was voted into public office as the Senate Democratic leader. In 2018, Mallory became the first gentleman of Michigan after his wife was elected governor of the state.
Mallory, a dentist, and Whitmer have no children together, but they do have a beautiful blended family consisting of Mallory's three sons from his first marriage, Alex, Mason, and Winston, and the politician's two daughters from her first marriage, Sydney and Sherry Shrewsbury. The first family of Michigan seems like a happy one, and Whitmer is grateful for them, telling Refinery29 that they help her to stay "grounded." Rounding out the beautiful blended family is Mallory and Whitmer's fur baby, a labradoodle named Kevin.
Whitmer's family has supported her through some difficult times, including a thwarted kidnapping plot in October 2020. In a statement following the arrests of the people reportedly involved in the plot, Whitmer said she and Mallory were "eternally grateful to everyone who put themselves in harm's way to keep our family safe."
Politician Pete Buttigieg's husband is the author of a memoir
Many people are familiar with politician Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., and his gorgeous husband, Chasten Buttigieg, thanks to Pete's presidential run. While Pete Buttigieg didn't clinch the Democratic nomination in the 2020 presidential election, the campaign did make him one of the most famous political figures in the country, and Chasten was by his side the entire time. In a speech shared by CNN, Chasten said that he wanted his husband to run for president because, "Pete got me to believe in myself again" and he "knew there were other kids sitting out there in this country who needed to believe in themselves too."
As noted by Time, Pete was the first openly gay person to seriously campaign for the presidency, making his bid a historic one. Chasten wrote about their relationship, as well as his early life, in a memoir called I Have Something to Tell You.
Tulsi Gabbard got to know her husband when he volunteered for her campaign
Not only do Tulsi Gabbard and her husband, Abraham Williams, make an attractive couple, they also have an incredible love story. As noted in their marriage announcement in The New York Times, Gabbard and Williams were acquainted for quite a while, but they really got to know each other in 2012, when Williams, a cinematographer, volunteered for the politician's campaign. Still, it wasn't until a year and a half later that Williams and the U.S. representative from Hawaii started dating after meeting up again at a birthday party for Gabbard thrown by a mutual friend. "It was the first time that we had a chance to kick back, relax and really talk on a personal level," said Gabbard.
The two tied the knot in 2015 and have been going strong ever since. Williams has made quite a name for himself, especially after Gabbard ran for the Democratic nomination for the 2020 presidential race. Marie Claire dubbed Williams the "coolest political spouse" in 2019.
Eleni Kounalakis' husband calls himself a total political spouse
Being married to a politician is not for the faint of heart. A political spouse needs to be able to weather not just attacks from the public and media but also the strain living in the public eye may put on their relationship. Eleni Kounalakis' husband, Dr. Markos Kounalakis, is no stranger to the stresses of fame. Eleni serves as the lieutenant governor of California, while her husband is a longtime journalist. Per his biography at the office of lieutenant governor of California's official website, he is "an award-winning, nationally-syndicated foreign affairs columnist, author, and scholar" who has worked all over the globe.
Markos is proud of his wife's accomplishments, even bragging about them in his Instagram bio where he refers to himself as a "scholar," "author," and "total political spouse." The politician and her handsome husband have two sons together, Neo and Eon.
Politician Kim Reynolds has been married to her high school sweetheart for decades
While celebrity relationships are notorious for being brief, many politicians and their husbands are in it for the long haul. Take, for example, Kim Reynolds and her husband, Kevin Reynolds. Kim made history in 2017, when she was sworn in as the first-ever female governor of Iowa. She and her first gentleman had been together for decades at that point. As noted by Kevin's bio at the National Governors Association, the couple met when they were still in high school.
Kevin was no stranger to government work when his wife became governor. After he graduated with a degree in agronomy from Iowa State University, he worked as a county resource planner and then worked in public service as a soil conservationist and district conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Kevin retired shortly before his wife took office, and he dedicated himself to his duties as first gentleman of Iowa.
Leslie Rutledge and her husband have a daughter together
The year 2015 was a big one for politician Leslie Rutledge. Not only was she elected as the first-ever female attorney general of Arkansas that year, but she also became engaged to her now-husband, Boyce Johnson. As noted in her official bio at the Attorney General of Arkansas' website, Rutledge was elected to a second term as attorney general in 2018.
Before becoming attorney general, Rutledge worked as a prosecutor. Her long career in public service seems to be a family tradition — her father is a lawyer and a judge. Rutledge credits him and her mother, a teacher, with teaching her "the importance of hard work and service."
Rutledge's husband seems to keep a rather low profile. As noted by Arkansas Online, he has an agricultural business. Rutledge and Johnson have a daughter together; Rutledge gave birth to Julianna Carol in 2018.
Elise Stefanik's husband has also worked in politics
Having someone who supports you is important in any relationship, but is especially critical to politicians as they have so many responsibilities and pressures placed upon them. An understanding spouse provides a good support system for any politician, but it's an added bonus for New York congresswoman Elise Stefanik that her husband, Matthew Manda, has also worked in politics. As noted by The New York Times, the couple married in 2017, when Stefanik was representing New York's 21st District and Manda was working for the Media Group of America as its marketing and communications director. He also previously worked as the communications director for another politician, Kansas Representative Kevin Yoder, and served as the political director for Senator Jerry Moran's 2010 campaign.
Stefanik's demanding job made wedding planning difficult, but her groom was understanding. The couple hired a team to help them pull off a gorgeous wedding. "They really understood that my constituents are my priority," Stefanik told Brides of the people who helped her pull off her big day.
Joyce Craig and her husband have known each other since the fourth grade
Many politicians have enjoyed long-lasting relationships. Enter Joyce Craig and her husband, Michael Craig, who have known each other for most of their lives. As noted by Business NH Magazine, they've known each other since the fourth grade. "We were friends forever," Joyce told the outlet. "We went to senior prom together and dated off and on."
Craig credits her loving husband with helping her become mayor, saying that he "knocked on more doors than anyone." His hard work not only helped her win the election but also helped Craig make history when, in 2017, she was elected as the first-ever female mayor of Manchester, N.H.
Craig's husband supported his wife while also managing his own successful career. Michael is an attorney and a founding partner of the law firm Craig & Gatzoulis. Previously, he was a state prosecutor. Per Craig's official website, they have three children together, William, Sarah, and Kathryn.
