What You Didn't Know About Sofia Vergara's First Marriage
Sofia Vergara is one of the most beautiful women in the world and, naturally, she's married to one of the most gorgeous men in the form of fellow actor and Magic Mike breakout star, Joe Manganiello. After just six months of dating, Manganiello proposed to Vergara (in Spanish, in Hawaii, and on Christmas Day) in 2014, per People. As he later told Haute Living very simply, "When you know, you know." Indeed. The lovebirds tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in Palm Beach, Fla. the following November, as reported by Pop Sugar at the time. The romantic affair was attended by more than 400 guests — including multiple celebs — with the Modern Family star clad in a stunning Zuhair Murad creation.
Basically, these two are clearly made for each other, and take every opportunity to gush about their relationship publicly — whether it's Vergara telling ET her hubby "supports me in everything," or Manganiello confirming to People just ahead of their fifth wedding anniversary, "My instincts about her were right." (Cue a chorus of awws.)
However, decades before the celebrated comedic actress and super-buff action star got together, Sofia Vergara took a trip down the aisle with a different Joe.
Sofia Vergara originally got married as a teenager
As HuffPost notes, when Sofia Vergara was just 18 years old, she got hitched to high school sweetheart Joe Gonzalez (pictured, middle). Judging by the wedding photos, it was a more intimate affair than the actress' nuptials to husband No. 2, Joe Manganiello. Glamour Path advises the couple was married for just three years, before divorcing in 1993. However, they've thankfully remained on good terms, particularly when it came to raising their now-adult son, Manolo Gonzalez-Ripoll Vergara, who was born in Colombia in September 1992.
"We're still close friends," Vergara said of Gonzalez to Parade. "When José comes to the United States, he stays with me." Meanwhile, of her model son, the proud mom told People, "I was very young when I divorced his father, so I raised him trying to set the best example and give him the best I could." Following in the footsteps of his famous mother and stepfather, Manolo's pursuing an acting career of his own, appearing in 2013's White Rabbit and 2015's Hot Pursuit alongside Vergara — and many more besides. He also has an ongoing relationship with his father, who attended his graduation from Emerson back in May 2015, according to sweet blended family snapshots on Vergara's Instagram.
Although Vergara didn't plan on being a single parent, she admitted to Harper's Bazaar, "Now that I look back, I never really needed the help of anyone ... It does feel great to look back and know I've done it all by myself. It's rewarding."
