The Real Reason Zooey Deschanel Would Never Go Vegan

These days, it seems like every second celebrity and influencer follows a vegan diet. However, the totally loveable Zooey Deschanel of New Girl fame does not. In fact, she has officially confirmed that she'll never be a vegan but her reasoning may surprise you.

In 2011, she's admitted to Health that she's actually tried the popular diet in the past. "My older sister, Bones star Emily Deschanel, has been a very, very committed vegan since high school," she said. "I wish I could be like that, but I'm not. I have a lot of food sensitivities — I can't eat wheat or soy — and it was very difficult to eat and get enough calories," she revealed, adding, "It was even impossible to eat at a vegan restaurant."

Speaking to New York Magazine the same year, the actress confessed, "At a certain point, you just have to go, 'You know, this gets in the way of my living too much '... I think I was at a sushi restaurant and I was like, 'Oh. F*** it.'" Fair enough.

Zoeey Deschanel follows a largely plant-based diet

So, what exactly does the 500 Days of Summer star eat? "I really try to enjoy vegetables as much as possible," she told Delish in 2018, admitting she eats a largely plant-based diet. In fact, she makes her number one goal to squeeze as many vegetables as possible into every single meal she makes. But there's a catch! She likes to make healthy food taste good. "That's always my goal," she says, "I feel like I've succeeded if I do that."

Speaking to US Magazine, Deschanel said, "I always think if we're going to have dessert, it's fun to make it... I like making zucchini muffins with my daughter because she can put the little cupcake liners in the cupcake tins and it's easy for her to do that and she feels like she's a part of it." We're guessing they don't quite beat chocolate muffins but it's certainly something worth trying.
