The Friends Reunion That Surprised Everyone At The Emmys

Emmy Awards host, Jimmy Kimmel kicked off the 2020 virtual Emmy's making fun of himself. "Why would you have an awards show in the middle of a pandemic, and what the hell am I doing here?" he asked his virtual audience. Now, we know the answer.

It was the moment we'd all been waiting for. Sure, Ozark star, Jason Bateman pretending to be a cardboard cut out of himself was much-needed comic relief. And, of course, we're glad that we didn't miss Jennifer Aniston hastily putting out a fire in heels and a designer dress. But we were much more interested in what happened when Aniston rushed off set to get home and see if she'd won the 2020 Emmy for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Aniston lost the category to Zendaya, who became the youngest Emmy winner for a lead actress in a drama. We're happy for Zendaya. And we can't say we're too sad for Aniston, either. Because when Kimmel called Aniston to check up on things, she answered the call, joined by her Friends' co-stars Courteney Cox (aka Monica) and Lisa Kudrow (aka Phoebe). "Of course I'm here, we live together," Cox told a confused Kimmel (via TV Line). "We've been roommates since 1994, Jimmy," Aniston chimed in. "Where else would I live?" asked Kudrow. Don't we wish it were true.

Social media reacts to the Friends reunion at the Emmys

"I am but a simple woman, I see a #Friends reunion and I get excited," exclaimed a Twitter admirer after watching the three women together, again (via Twitter). "I'm just totally shocked," tweeted another. We get it. Our hearts fell out of our chests, too. Aniston, Cox, and Kudrow weren't, unfortunately, joined by their male co-stars, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry, or Matt Leblanc, of course. Instead, and as mysteriously as he went from cardboard to real person earlier in the Emmys, Jason Bateman popped his head into Kimmel's live stream with Aniston. Twitter was not amused. "I was waiting for the guys! then the Ozark Dude appeared I thought was Chandler. I almost cried," lamented one fan on Twitter

Maybe Aniston, Cox, and Kudrow took advantage of the time together to run lines for their long-rumored upcoming reunion show on HBO Max. If there's a set date for the filming of the long-anticipated show, we don't know it yet. Back in August, Aniston promised Deadline, "It's going to be super ... this has also given us more time to make it even more exciting and more fun than it would have been. So I choose to see it as the glass is half-full that it got postponed. Look, we're not going anywhere. You're never going to get rid of Friends, sorry. You're stuck with us for life, guys." We're counting on it Aniston!
