The Truth About Cher's Relationship With Diana Ross

Diana Ross and Cher have a lot in common. They're both legendary singers, have powerhouse pipes, and got their start in the 1960s. In 1975, Ross and Cher were co-presenters at the first Rock Music Awards. They've also both been in love with the same man: Gene Simmons.

Per CheatSheet, Cher was with the Kiss singer first. Their relationship started in the late 1970s, and lasted for a few years. In a 1979 interview with People, Cher revealed that she and Simmons both spent the occasional night with another person — and that both were okay with it — but that they always came back to each other. "Gene is the only one I'm crazy about," she said.

The feeling was mutual. "I'm crazy about Cher, nuts about her," said the rock star. "She's my first love. Cher's an untainted soul who has never done anything bad to anybody."

Cher and Diana Ross were in a love triangle with Gene Simmons

Simmons and Cher were living together in Malibu when he fell for Ross. "One Christmas I asked [Cher] what I should buy her and she said, 'Call my friend Diana Ross, she will tell you exactly what I like as she is my best friend,'" SImmons told the Mirror in 2015. "So I called Diana up and we went shopping. Then our feelings for each other developed very fast and we started a relationship together. I guess thereafter Cher and Diana never spoke."

The claim that his relationship with Ross ended her friendship with Cher contradicts what Simmons said in a 1980 interview with People, though. Simmons told the outlet at the time that Cher harbored no ill feelings towards Ross or her ex, and that she even went with Ross to a Kiss rehearsal that year. "We'll know each other forever," he said.

While it's true that Cher and Ross don't appear to be BFFs anymore, it does seem like Cher still holds a soft spot for her one-time bestie. In a 2017 tweet, Cher praised the music legend, calling her "breathtakingly beautiful" and "electric on stage."
