You Should Never Wear Velcro Rollers To Bed. Here's Why

Velcro rollers may be old-fashioned — but they also can make the best, long-lasting curls. Pop them in overnight, and voila, bouncy hair all day. Now the bad news: Even though velcro rollers cut out the need for a hot iron, they still can do some damage to your hair. As Alarm Buzz noted, beneath the velcro is a hard, wire roller. Combine that with the grip factor of the velcro itself, and as you toss and turn overnight, you're setting your locks up for plenty of breakage. Making matters worse, if you're sleeping on a cotton pillowcase, the moisture can get zapped out of your hair. Since dry hair is the most likely to experience breakage, adding rollers into the mix maximizes the problem.

If you just can't live without your velcro rollers, try using them for between 15 and 20 minutes to achieve your desired bounce, hairstylist Matt Fugate suggested to Allure. Or if you're ready to ditch the velcro and shake up your styling routine, there are few things you can do instead.

Try sock curls instead of velcro rollers

So, what do you do if you want to wake up with gorgeous curly locks? Instead of possibly damaging your hair with velcro rollers, try sock curls. The viral TikTok trend has many testing their hands at creating their curls with footwear. Basically, you start with damp hair and use a sock to curl four to six different sections of hair towards your scalp, tying a knot at the bottom of the sock to hold the curls (via TerrificTresses). You then can sleep with these sock curls firmly in place and wake up with a full head of tousled curls. This technique is gentler on your hair — but you still want to rest your head on a satin or silk pillow to avoid tugging and breakage.

You don't have to stick with just socks either. You can use a silk scarf, stockings, or a bathrobe tie to achieve your curls by following the same protocol — dampening your hair and curling inward (via Refinery29). If your hair is damaged, stick with the smoother varieties of fabric to make sure that you're gently curling throughout the night.
