One Day At A Time Season 4 Release Date, Cast, And Plot
Netflix show One Day at a Time was an instant hit with fans when it debuted in 2017. A reboot of the original sitcom which ran from 1975 to 1985 (per IMDb), the modern incarnation of the show centers on a Cuban-American family. The show was lauded for its diversity and holds a 98 percent tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
While the show was cancelled by Netflix after its third season aired in 2019 (via TVLine), it has since been picked up by Pop TV and is set to air its fourth season in 2020. Here's everything we know about season 4 of One Day at a Time.
What is the release date of One Day at a Time season 4?
Per TVLine, Pop TV announced at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that season 4 of the beloved sitcom will premiere on Tuesday, March 24, at 9:30 p.m., following Schitt's Creek. One Day at a Time will remain in that time slot for a few weeks, before moving up half an hour to 9 p.m. on April 14 following the series finale of Schitt's Creek.
The weekly format will be a big adjustment for fans, who were used to having the entire season released at once on Netflix. This is the first time that a cable channel has picked up a cancelled streaming show.
"The enthusiastic response from fans since announcing our new season of One Day at a Time has been thrilling," said Pop TV president Brad Schwartz in a statement about picking up the show. "The series is more important than ever with its unmatched ability to tackle topical social issues through the lens of a relatable, loving family. The exceptionally talented team behind and in front of the camera make us proud to have One Day at a Time at home at Pop TV."
Who will star in One Day at a Time season 4?
Season 4 of One Day at a Time will bring us the same characters we know and love. While there doesn't appear to be an official confirmation that the entire original cast will be back, from what we know of the season's plot, the core characters will have their stories continued in the new season.
In July 2019, Justina Machado, who plays Penelope Alvarez, posted an old cast photo on Instagram featuring herself as well as the actors who play her family members. She wrote, "I'm excited to hang out with my familia again!!" seemingly confirming that Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, and Rita Moreno, who play her daughter, son, and mother, will definitely be returning to the screen.
What is the plot of One Day at a Time season 4?
It seems that season 4 will pick up where the season 3 finale left off.
According to Pop TV (via TVLine), "This season will find Penelope exploring a surprising relationship, her mother Lydia experiencing a religious crisis (as well as revealing the details of her surprise trip to Cuba with Dr. Berkowitz), and Schneider finding his relationship with Avery growing deeper. Meanwhile, Elena begins to prepare for college and Alex starts to date."
One major change coming along with the change of network is the theme song, which will be cut, all except for the show's title, which will still be sung. "I love the opening title sequence with so many personal photos from all of their lives, but we don't have that 50 seconds," said showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellet at the Television Critics Association winter press tour (via TV Guide). "We need it for the show!"
