The Best Dressed Stars At The 2020 Golden Globes

The 2020 Golden Globes took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, Calif. on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020. Comedian Ricky Gervais hosted the awards ceremony for the fifth time, garnering both praise for his dry wit and criticism for his seemingly nonchalant, uncaring attitude toward the star-studded event (via USA Today). Nevertheless, the room was buzzing with palpable excitement, as the ceremony officially kicked off the 2020 awards show season.

Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost continued being one of the most adorable couples in Hollywood. And, as always, Billy Porter made a statement with his red carpet ensemble, writing on Instagram that his outfit "[symbolized] peace, hope, and new beginnings," as well as "transformation and self-realization."

These stars and more used the evening as an opportunity to prove that they're as stylish as they are talented. Here's a look at the best dressed celebrities at the 2020 Golden Globes.

Taylor Swift brought summer vibes to the 2020 Golden Globes

The 2020 Golden Globes might have taken place in January, but that didn't stop superstar Taylor Swift from serving summery vibes on the red carpet.

Swift, whose song "Beautiful Ghosts" was nominated for best original song in a motion picture, walked the Golden Globes red carpet wearing a flowing, floral gown from the Italian fashion house Etro, as noted by Elle. The custom, silk jacquard dress featured large, yellow flowers against a midnight-blue background, along with a keyhole cutout, sweetheart neckline, and dramatic, floor-sweeping train. Swift accessorized her bright and colorful Golden Globes look with multicolored Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, and she tied her signature blonde locks into a loose, classic updo.

While she walked the red carpet alone, Swift later joined her longtime boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, at their Golden Globes table — making the awards ceremony the most public outing thus far for the famously private couple. Though she didn't win an award, Swift did take to the stage to present the Golden Globe for best animated feature film alongside comedian Amy Poehler — a charming, funny moment that seemed to officially squash the rumored beef between the two beloved stars (via Us Weekly).

Billy Porter's 2020 Golden Globes look was angelic

Can a best dressed list even exist without Billy Porter

In addition to being a seriously talented actor, Porter is a gift sent to us red carpet lovers from the fashion gods themselves, as Billy Porter's had almost too many best dressed moments to count. And, if you don't believe us, the angelic ensemble Porter donned at the 2020 Golden Globes should convince you.

The Pose star arrived to the awards ceremony wearing an all-white tuxedo, a long, feathery train, and $2 million of Tiffany & Co. jewels, serving major celestial being vibes while completely (and deservedly) stealing the spotlight. As Porter shared with E! News, his heavenly ensemble was created by designer Alex Vinash, and it took a whopping three months of work to complete. Even more impressive is the fact that Porter's look required the help an assistant to carry his angelic, feathery train. "The feathers are fragile, [and] the train [comes] off," Porter told E! News. He continued, telling the outlet, "This is not a sitting outfit, it's a standing outfit."

Porter took to Instagram to explain his decision to wear all-white, writing, "The color symbolizes peace, hope, and new beginnings." Now, that's something we can all get behind.

Scarlett Johansson may be the star of Marvel's Black Widow, but nothing suits the actress better than a brilliant pop of color.

At the 2020 Golden Globes, Johansson lived up to her colorful name by wearing a gorgeous, scarlet evening gown from designer Vera Wang (via E! News), which featured crimson silk faille fabric, a dramatic, plunging V-neck, an oversized bow, and a long, sweeping train. Johansson was joined at the Golden Globes by her fiancé, Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost. While she didn't win a Golden Globe at the January 2020 ceremony, Johansson certainly seemed totally in love and happier than ever.

Charlize Theron was a total bombshell at the 2020 Golden Globes

Charlize Theron, whose portrayal of Megyn Kelly in the 2019 film Bombshell earned the actress universal praise, reminded us all of how much of a real-life bombshell she actually is with her 2020 Golden Globes look.

Courtesy of Dior Haute Couture, Theron's head-turning gown also featured a sultry black bodice and flowing black cape, which trailed behind the star as she floated down the red carpet, as noted by Entertainment Tonight. Speaking to Ryan Seacrest, Theron gushed over Kazu Hiro, the master prosthetics creator who helped transform her into the infamous former Fox News broadcaster. News). She continued, saying, "That was such a great gift [Hiro] gave me."

Phoebe Waller-Bridge looked powerful at the 2020 Golden Globes

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator and star of the hit Amazon series Fleabag, is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood — as well as one of the most powerful. In addition to garnering universal praise and numerous accolades for her work on Fleabag, Waller-Bridge is responsible for writing Season 1 of the Sandra Oh spy drama Killing Eve, and she also had a hand in writing the 2020 James Bond installment, No Time to Die

Simply put, Waller-Bridge's star power is only growing brighter by the second — so it should come as no surprise that the Fleabag creator wore a total power suit to the 2020 Golden Globes. Designed by Ralph & Russo, the black pantsuit featured lace detailing, a black silk lapel, and a plunging neckline (via The Hollywood Reporter). The actress kept her accessories to a minimum with simple stud earrings, and styled her short bob with tousled loose waves.

As reported by People, Waller-Bridge announced after her big Golden Globes win that she'd be auctioning off her pantsuit in an effort to raise money for fire relief in Australia.

Renee Zellweger kept it classy with her 2020 Golden Globes look

Renée Zellweger is making a comeback in a major way, and we are so here for it.

While she seemed to disappear from the spotlight for quite some time, Zellweger returned to the big screen in full force with her starring turn in the 2019 Judy Garland biopic, Judy. Zellweger's transformation into the beloved Wizard of Oz star has been praised by fans and film critics alike, garnering many a prediction that she will be the one to take home the Oscar for best actress at the 2020 Academy Awards. And, considering Zellweger's portrayal of Garland scored her a Golden Globe, it's safe to say those predictions may just be proven true.

Ahead of her big win, Zellweger walked the Golden Globes red carpet looking like a classic Hollywood starlet in a strapless, powder blue Armani Privé gown, which featured a thigh-high leg slit and intricate, crystal detailing along the gown's edges. Like many stars at the awards ceremony, Zellweger sported a fresh-faced look, and pulled her hair into a loose updo, allowing just a few strands to frame her famous face.

Saoirse Ronan shined at the 2020 Golden Globes

She may be the star of Greta Gerwig's 2019 adaptation of Little Women, but there's certainly nothing "little" about Saoirse Ronan's star power.

The Irish actress, who plays Jo March in the updated Little Women, arrived to the 2020 Golden Globes in a sparkling gown that shined almost as much as Ronan does onscreen. Ronan's gown was quite the departure from her usual red carpet attire, as the slinky, sparkling gown featured spaghetti straps, a thigh-high leg slit, and a low back that showcased a fair amount of the actress' skin. "We wanted to celebrate Saoirse's femininity, while being powerful and a little bit sexy," Elizabeth Saltzman told Vogue. Saltzman continued, "You don't think of Saoirse showing skin," noting, "This was all about showing skin."

According to Saltzman, as wonderful as she may look, Ronan doesn't exactly feel comfortable in typical, glamorous red carpet outfits. "Saoirse isn't J-Lo, who loves to dress up," the stylist told Vogue. She continued, "The red carpet is a form of work for her."

Tiffany Haddish was bright and bubbly on the 2020 Golden Globes red carpet

Tiffany Haddish steals the show pretty much everywhere she goes, so it's no surprise that all eyes were on the hilarious actress-comedian at the 2020 Golden Globes. Haddish arrived to the awards ceremony wearing a stunning purplish-pink gown, courtesy of Galia Lahav. Along with a plunging V-neckline, the gorgeous gown featured a tied empire waist and a long, flowing, flattering silhouette. Haddish kept her hair and makeup simple, and she accessorized her Golden Globes look with metallic jewels — as well as her signature, thousand-watt smile.

Following her evening at the Golden Globes, Haddish took to Instagram to show fans another stunning photo of her gown, along with a caption expressing her gratitude and excitement for what's to come. "When you can see 2020 will be the year that everything you have been working for is coming," Haddish captioned a photo of herself pensively looking over a balcony. She continued, "Thank you God for always being with me even when I felt like you were far from me ... I will always keep an eye out for you, like you do for me."

Cate Blanchett looked like a ray of sunshine at the 2020 Golden Globes

Cate Blanchett is not only one of the greatest actresses of her generation; she's a bona fide fashion icon — especially to those of us who delight in getting as much use as possible out of an outfit we adore.

During the opening night of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, observant fans noticed that Blanchett was wearing the same black lace Giorgio Armani Privé gown she'd worn while accepting an award at the 2014 Golden Globes (via Marie Claire). The dress was iconic, so we were thrilled to see Blanchett rock it again — and we're already awaiting the next time we'll see the actress in the gorgeous yellow gown she donned at the 2020 Golden Globes.

Ana de Armas made an unforgettable debut at the 2020 Golden Globes

You might not have known Ana de Armas' name before, but chances are she's definitely on your radar now. The 2020 Golden Globes marked de Armas' first-ever time attending the ceremony, and it's safe to say the star made quite the first impression with the Disney princess-esque ball gown she wore throughout the evening.

The Knives Out actress stunned in a midnight-blue, sparkling, strapless ball gown designed by Ralph & Russo, which she accessorized with dazzling Tiffany & Co. jewels, as noted by Entertainment Tonight. With her dark hair parted down the middle pulled back into a low pony, de Armas sported a classic red lip and simple eye makeup. Of course, perhaps the best part about de Armas' Golden Globes debut dress was the fact that it came equipped with pockets! Stars — they love a pocket, just like us.

Speaking to Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet, de Armas revealed just how special and exciting her Golden Globes nomination was for both herself and her family. "They started crying," the actress told Rancic, saying the nomination was "something so beyond any dream" she'd had.

Jennifer Aniston was back in black at the 2020 Golden Globes

Jennifer Aniston's attendance at the 2020 Golden Globes was very much anticipated for more than just one reason. Considering the actress recently made her return to television with her starring role in The Morning Show, fans were thrilled to see Aniston recognized for her work. However, perhaps even more exciting than Aniston's Golden Globes nomination was the possibility of seeing her reunite with ex-husband, Brad Pitt. After all, Pitt seemed excited to see Aniston, whom he called a "good friend." The actor joked to Entertainment Tonight ahead of the awards ceremony that seeing his ex-wife would be the "second most important reunion of her year." Pitt then quickly explained, "That was a play on Friends. They were saying that."

Her reunion with Pitt aside, Aniston arrived at the 2020 Golden Globes looking like she'd just stepped out of 1950s Hollywood. Wearing a strapless black Dior Haute Couture ball gown, Aniston looked as elegant as ever as she glided down the red carpet (via People). Sporting loosely curled locks and a 1950s Cartier diamond necklace, Aniston proved it's entirely possible to be both effortlessly beautiful and totally glam all at once. Welcome back, Jen!

Margot Robbie kept it cool, casual, and chic at the 2020 Golden Globes

Margot Robbie's performance in the 2019 flick Bombshell earned the actress a much-deserved Golden Globes nomination — but we think the dress she wore to the awards ceremony deserves a prize as well.

Robbie opted to go against the grain and keep her 2020 Golden Globes outfit sleek, simple, and just a tad sparkly. With her blonde locks loosely curled and framing her face, the actress stunned on the red carpet in a strapless Chanel gown, which featuring a white column skirt with an embroidered, colorful top. Much like Ana de Armas, Robbie opted to wear a dress with pockets, which only makes us love her more.

According to stylist Kate Young, the simple-yet-sassy vibe of Robbie's Golden Globes look is what made it such a winner. "The attitude and ease is what I love about it," Young revealed to WWD.

While Robbie certainly pulled off the look with ease, the gown was apparently anything but easy to create. According to Entertainment Tonight, the embroidered bustier required 4,750 multi-color sequins and beads and took 225 hours to make. Talk about a labor of love!
