5 Signs Patrick & Brittany Mahomes' Relationship Is On The Rocks

Brittany and Patrick Mahomes have had their fair share of awkward moments over the years, and some pundits are of the opinion that there are some strange things about the Mahomes' relationship that avid fans are happy to ignore, including red flags that indicate their marriage might someday end in shambles. For instance, eagle-eyed followers took note when Brittany shared her happy place on her Instagram Stories following the 2025 Super Bowl. "The happiest in the sun," the former soccer player wrote, alongside a selfie and a picture of the glaring sun (via People). Notably, though, her hubby was nowhere to be seen. But that doesn't necessarily mean he's not a part of his wife's happy place. Brittany previously acknowledged to People that their lives are "hectic, especially with the little ones [their three kids] running around," so maybe she just needed a moment alone.

Aside from favoring a sunny day over her husband every now and then, some fans also find it strange that Patrick and Brittany waited eight years to tie the knot, and she fell pregnant with their first child before the NFL star got down on one knee. The celebrity couple have known each other since high school but didn't study at the same university. They managed to maintain a long-distance relationship and, in 2020, Patrick finally asked Brittany to be his wife. The superstar athlete admitted at the time that, even though he'd known her for nearly a decade by that point, it was still completely terrifying. As he told 610 Sports Radio, "Before you get on that knee, your heart's racing, I promise you that," (via Today).

Patrick's fame caught Brittany completely off guard

When Brittany and Patrick Mahomes started dating, they never could've imagined that he'd become a superstar. "I was not prepared for this," Brittany confessed on "CBS Mornings" in 2023, adding, "I didn't expect it to skyrocket this soon and just be thrown into the fire like this." Once he became a successful NFL player, Brittany's Instagram followers grew, and she quickly got a slew of criticism from internet trolls whenever she posted anything. The influencer had to learn fast to choose what she shares on the platform wisely.

Opening up to her fans during a 2023 Instagram Q&A, Brittany professed that dealing with the hate that came with her husband's fame was no easy feat, especially in the beginning. Fortunately, she no longer cares what people online have to say about her or her husband. "I could give two s***s about people's opinion of me that don't even know me," Brittany asserted (via Stylecaster). The former soccer player also indicated during an appearance on the "WHOOP" podcast, in 2024, that she relies heavily on Patrick when trolls go on a tirade against her, noting, "Having him beside me and kind of guiding me, coaching me through it has helped a ton. I think that's kind of how we've gotten to where we are now."

We wonder how much pressure the spotlight has really put on the Mahomes' relationship since the footballer's career kicked off proper — especially given the fact that Patrick's only become more popular among sports fans.

The Mahomes appear to have different political views

Brittany Mahomes may be a secret Republican, something internet sleuths discovered when she liked an Instagram post from Donald Trump. The post in question outlined the president's plans for his second term, which included controversial topics like immigration and removing transgender athletes from women's sports. Brittany later unliked the post, probably because of the intense backlash that followed. But then Trump complicated matters by calling her out as a "MAGA fan" on Fox News (via X, formerly known as Twitter).

Patrick Mahomes, meanwhile, isn't vocal about his politics. When asked about his wife's seemingly pro-Trump stance, the star quarterback confirmed that he refused to get involved in politics or to publicly endorse any candidate. "I think my place is to inform people to get registered to vote, is to inform people to do their own research and then make their best decision for them and their family," he reasoned to A to Z Sports. Patrick's answer hinted that he wasn't a Trump fan, and if so, it could cause some friction in his marriage.

Susan Trombetti, matchmaker and CEO of Exclusive Matchmaking, exclusively explained to The List how differing political beliefs can create tumult in a marriage, especially if one party tries to impose their stance on the other. "It comes down to how people communicate in their marriage and during conflict resolution," she argued. "If you are respectful of the other person's views, then it doesn't have to be a dealbreaker. If you aren't, or tell them they are stupid, well that's not going to fly." Trombetti also warned against trying to force your partner to change their mind, advising simply, "Respect their opinions [and] stay away from heated discussions on politics."

Women flirting with her husband used to make Brittany jealous

Patrick Mahomes tried to teach Brittany Mahomes a big lesson about fame — essentially, don't respond to the haters — and in certain instances, she heeded his advice, but Brittany has also frequently makes headlines for the controversy she's caused when responding to trolls. When fans asked during an Instagram Q&A how she feels about female fans flirting with her husband, the proud WAG answered, "Lol it's actually really sad how disrespectful some women are...But they are a waist [sic] of my time & not going to disturb my peace," (via People). Brittany also got candid about the fact that she wasn't always this unbothered. As a little disclaimer to the post, she wrote, "I did use to have a very hard time and get extremely annoyed. But I am now to a point where I could care less!"

Jealousy can be a relationship ender if it's not kept in check. While often these feelings of resentment can be a helpful indicator that something is off and needs to be addressed, jealousy can also become a destructive force if it's suppressed. It's not clear if Brittany has really just got used to all the attention her husband receives from adoring fans or whether she is, in fact, simply trying to suppress her jealousy. Depending on how you interpret what she posted on Instagram, it can read as slightly passive aggressive. But pushing those feelings down in the long run doesn't bode well for the future of her marriage.

Brittany has a tendency to give Patrick the silent treatment when she's mad at him

Brittany Mahomes might be a bit of a mean girl, if some people who've met her are to be believed. Even her husband, Patrick Mahomes, once hinted during an interview that he can always tell when his wife is unhappy about something. A different side of the popular WAG was exposed by TikToker Jessica O'Connor in 2022, when she accused the former soccer star of being stingy after she served Brittany during a week-long stay in a Hollywood hotel. O'Connor proclaimed, "Not only did she not tip, she was just genuinely unpleasant," (via Page Six). When Brittany gets mad at her husband, however, she's stingy in other ways.

While the Mahomes were taking a couple's quiz with GQ Sports in 2023, Brittany asked Patrick, "How do you know when I'm upset?" Her husband responded, "I think it's just when you get quiet. You just get quiet; I'm like, 'Something is wrong.'" This behavior made him "nervous," with the quarterback divulging, "I'm like, 'What did I do? I don't even remember what I did.'" Patrick's response hinted that Brittany tends to give him the silent treatment when she's upset.

This is not a healthy way to resolve conflict and can even turn into emotional abuse if one party uses it to get the other to do something they want. Giving someone the silent treatment can leave the affected person confused because their partner won't tell them what they did wrong — something that's eerily similar to what Patrick described during the Q&A. Additionally, the silent treatment can only lead to ongoing conflict that can be detrimental to a relationship.

She seems to have a troubled relationship with her brother-in-law

For the uninitiated, in 2023, Patrick Mahomes endured a very public family scandal when his younger brother, Jackson Mahomes, was charged with three counts of aggravated sexual battery. Jackson denied any wrongdoing at first, but in March 2024 he pleaded guilty on one count, resulting in six months of probation. Despite escaping jail time, this wasn't a good look for the family. Brittany Mahomes initially defended her brother-in-law, but as the court case came to a close, she appeared to have changed her stance.

Brittany and Jackson both attended a Future concert ahead of the 2024 Super Bowl, but she notably didn't allow her brother-in-law to join her in the VIP section, simply shrugging her shoulders at him as he tried to convince security to let him through. Then, fans noticed the WAG throwing an icy glare at Jackson when he made an Instagram Story hyping up fans in the aftermath of the Kansas City Chiefs' victory that weekend. It seemed all was not well between the in-laws, and this could spell trouble for the Mahomes' marriage.

However, Brittany and Jackson might agree on President Donald Trump. Jackson posted a selfie with the divisive politician on Instagram during the 2025 Super Bowl, and if Patrick Mahomes isn't a fan, as some suspect, having both his brother and wife disagreeing with him over politics could prove problematic. Susan Trombetti, matchmaker and CEO of Exclusive Matchmaking, exclusively told The List that in situations like these, it would be best for the couple to avoid broaching the subject at all, especially when surrounded by their in-laws. "Focus on the great things such as the holiday spirit, the things you like about them [your in-laws], or the other commonalities you have," she suggested instead.
