Celebrity Couples Who Met On Blind Dates
You may not think of a blind date as being the ideal way to meet your special someone, but a survey conducted in 2014 (via Brides) discovered that this was how over a quarter of newlyweds met. As it happens, blind dates led to more marriages than meeting at work, the gym, a night out, and even the serendipitous coffee shop. If your "average" couple is finding love through a date set up by friends or acquaintances, then it stands to reason that celebrities would be using this avenue to find a partner too, right? You betcha.
While some blind dates may be disastrous — like the one Britney Spears went on with the dude who "looked like a lizard" — many famous people have been able to find love in this fashion. Some stars have even gone on to marry their date. Here are a few celebs you probably never knew were set up.
Jon Stewart and Tracey McShane
Jon Stewart and Tracey Stewart, née McShane, are the epitome of couple goals. Together they run an animal rescue farm in New Jersey, providing abused animals with a new lease on life. In August 2018, the couple made headlines when they came to the aid of two Boer goats that were found roaming the subway tracks in New York City. Had it not been for their blind date, Jon and Tracey Stewart may never have even met, never mind fallen in love and started a sanctuary.
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, the couple spilled the deets about their relationship. Jon revealed that they met "on the only blind date either of [them] had ever been on, at a Mexican restaurant." Tracey chimed in, saying, "The date wasn't blind for me." That is, not completely blind because she had watched him on television. As a fan of Jon's show, Tracey told her friends she wanted to be with "someone funny and sweet, like Jon Stewart." Her friends did one better and set her up with Stewart himself.
Pete Sampras and Bridgette Wilson
In the late '90s, 29-year-old tennis champion Peter Sampras happened to spot actress Bridgette Wilson at a movie theater in Los Angeles, California. "I said to my friend, half-kidding, 'I'd love to meet her,'" he revealed in an interview with InStyle (via samprasfanz.org). That friend heard him loud and clear and ended up getting her phone number from one of their mutual friends.
"I had never watched tennis, so I wasn't familiar with him," Wilson admitted to the publication. "But when I saw his picture, I was like, 'Oh yeah, he's a cutie.'" The two ended up going out to dinner, which Wilson dubbed "the closest thing to a blind date I've ever been on." The couple married just one year — to the month — later. Sampras and Wilson have certainly gone the distance. Two children and nearly two decades later, their relationship is still going strong.
Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff
Singer Jack Antonoff met Lena Dunham in April 2012 soon after Girls, the show which she wrote, directed, produced, and starred in, premiered on HBO. The two were set up by comedian Mike Birbiglia, who happens to be a close friend of Antonoff's.
"It was a blind date by modern standards," the singer told Vulture in 2014. "I mean, I used the internet." On that first blind date, Antonoff recalled telling Lena "everything" about his life and himself because, as he explained, "when you really like someone, you want them to know everything about you." At the time, Antonoff felt he and Dunham were well-suited for each other. In 2015, Dunham revealed that the two would marry after the legalization of same-sex marriage in all 50 states. Antonoff and Dunham would continue dating each other until January 2018, when, sadly, their reps confirmed the couple's split to People.
Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen
The circumstances surrounding Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen's relationship are unusual, to put it delicately. When the two first started dating, Brady's ex, Bridget Moynahan, revealed she was pregnant with Brady's child. Talk about messy. Despite enduring complications early on in their relationship, the two had quite a wonderful first date.
On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the host asked Bündchen where and how she and Brady met. "Um, we actually had a blind date," she explained. She revealed that the people in her life at that time were focused on helping her find a boyfriend. Her date with Brady was "actually [her] third blind date." After two disastrous dinners, she decided she would only meet lucky number three for a drink in case she wanted to bolt early. "But, you know, when I saw those kind eyes, I literally fell in love, like, right away," she swooned. And they've been together ever since.
Hilarie Burton and Jeffrey Dean Morgan
You don't need us to tell you how adorable Hilarie Burton and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are as a couple. Red carpet photos of the lovebirds speak volumes. While the two did seem like a bit of an unlikely match at first, it didn't take us long to fall in love with them. Nevertheless, you may not have realized how they met.
Back in 2009, Morgan's costar on Supernatural, Jensen Ackles, set the two up on a blind double date alongside his wife and himself. The date didn't go exactly as you might expect. In an interview with The Huffington Post (via E! News), Morgan revealed,"I [got lit]. We all did. We ended up back at my house drinking shots of tequila." But, hey, it worked. The couple began dating and welcomed their first child, Augustus, in 2010. Burton gave birth to the couple's second child, a daughter, in 2018.
Meghan Trainor and Daryl Sabara
When Meghan Trainor met Daryl Sabara, the singer was actively looking for love. "I asked every person I met since day one, 'Find me a boyfriend!' Like, especially new friends too," she revealed in an interview with Chelsea Handler (via People) in 2016. Almost immediately after meeting actress and model Chloë Grace Moretz, Trainor asked her usual question. Moretz told the then-single Trainor that she knew "the nicest guy in the world, Daryl." Moretz was referring to Daryl Sabara, an actor most notably known for his role as a child actor in the Spy Kids movies. But that's not all he does. "He plays guitar and piano and sings to me all the time," Trainor revealed. "We sing Justin Timberlake all the time."
Shortly before Christmas 2018, Trainor and Sabara exchanged wedding vows in the presence of friends and family in an intimate backyard ceremony. It seems Chloë Grace Moretz is quite the matchmaker.
Lauren Conrad and William Tell
If you were a fan of The Hills, you were likely heartbroken watching Lauren Conrad and Jason Wahler's relationship dissolve on screen. You may have wondered what would come of Conrad and Wahler. The exes would eventually both get married — to different people, that is — and Wahler finally, and fortunately, got sober.
"She's a sweet girl," Wahler said of Conrad back in 2014, "and we are just totally different personalities and she is super, super sweet." He continued, adding that "being full fledged in [his] addiction during that time" also didn't exactly help their relationship any way.
Conrad actually met the man she would eventually marry prior to starring in the reality show with Wahler. "I met my husband when I was 16 and sitting onstage at one of his concerts," she wrote on her website. "Ten years later we were set up on a blind date."
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
If you need a compelling reason to go on a blind date, just look to Meghan Markle's example. It was all because of a blind date that she is now part of the royal family. Seriously. Had the actress not agreed to be set up with the prince, she might not have become the Duchess of Sussex.
In an interview with the couple, Meghan revealed that her and Harry's first date was "definitely a setup." She continued, saying, "It was a blind date." Being from the United States, Meghan said she didn't really know much about the royal family, including Harry. Her only question for the friend that set them up, she revealed, was, "Well, is he nice?"
Harry also revealed that he hadn't heard of Meghan nor watched her on television before his friend suggested they meet. He admitted that he was "beautifully surprised" when he first saw her. The two got drinks and then met for a second date the next day and, well, you know how this story ends.
Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson
If you're surprised to learn that Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson met on a blind date, don't feel bad — her sister Kim didn't know either.
When Ryan Seacrest sat down with Kris Jenner, Khloé, Kourtney, and Kim, he more-or-less asked Khloé if basketball players were her type. "Yeah, I kind of have a type, I guess. Yeah, I mean, I don't know what that is, but I was put on a blind date with Tristan and that's how I met Tristan." Kim interjected, asking, "Really?" At the same time, Jenner was curious to know who set them up.
Khloé revealed that a mutual friend, basketball player Brandon Jennings, arranged the whole thing. She didn't even have a chance to look him up online before she was "ambushed" with the date. Since the two met, the couple welcomed their daughter, True, in April 2018. As of this writing, though, some are speculating that a split is inevitable.
Salma Hayek and Francois-Henri Pinault
When former Gucci executive Mimma Viglezio told Salma Hayek that she wanted to set her up with French billionaire François-Henri Pinault, Hayek was stunned and maybe even a little grossed out. "What do you mean? I'm not going out with some 70-year-old guy," Viglezio recalled the actress' words when speaking to The New York Times. But Pinault wasn't "some 70-year-old guy" as Hayek initially believed. "She thought she was supposed to go out with his father," the former executive revealed. Because he shares a name with his dad, it's pretty easy to confuse them.
Once the misunderstanding was cleared up, Hayek met the younger Pinault, but still wasn't sure that he was her type. It wasn't until they started talking about their common interests that a real connection was made. Before long, the couple ended up having a child and getting married. In 2018, Hayek and Pinault even renewed their wedding vows, so we'd say things are going pretty well for this twosome.
