The Best Dressed Stars At The 2019 Golden Globes
Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the 76th Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place on January 6, 2019 at The Beverly Hilton hotel. Considered one of the biggest nights for the entertainment industry at large, the star-studded event was attended by some of the most recognizable, celebrated artists from both film and television.
While the awards ceremony itself is meant to honor those whose work in the past year has made a considerable impact within the entertainment realm, one would be remiss not to take a moment and appreciate the stunning showcase of designer-wear donned by everyone's favorite celebs. That said, it's safe to say that these stars certainly kicked off awards season on a high note with their head-turning red carpet ensembles. From bold pops of color, to various modern-takes on the classic Cinderella gown, to co-host Sandra Oh dazzling in each of her multiple outfit changes, the 2019 Golden Globes was definitely one for the books. Here's a look at some of the exciting evening's best dressed stars.
Kiki Layne
Kiki Layne only recently experienced her big break in late 2018 with the heart-wrenching crime-drama, If Beale Street Could Talk. And judging by her critically acclaimed performance, you can expect to see a lot more from this talented actress in the years to come.
However, if the 2019 Golden Globe Awards ceremony is any indication, Layne's acting prowess won't be the only the only thing captivating audiences throughout her promising career — the Beale Street star's red carpet style will certainly be the talk of Tinseltown for quite some time. Layne floated down the red carpet during her Golden Globes debut looking like an absolute queen in a custom Dior blush ball gown. The asymmetrical, off-the-shoulder neckline perfectly complemented the dazzling Bulgari choker clasped around Layne's neck, and her top-knot bun added the perfect dash of extra elegance to this already regal look. We can't wait to watch this gal conquer the world, both on-screen and on the red carpet.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga may have stolen our hearts as Ally in 2018's A Star is Born, but if you've been a "little monster" since the beginning of her career, you know that this star was born a long, long time ago. While Gaga has proven her superstar status time and time again by rolling out one hit song after another, Mother Monster showed the world the full scope of her talent with her powerful performance in the Bradley Cooper-directed flick, for which she was expected to win the award for Best Actress.
While that award ultimately went home with the equally-deserving Glenn Close, Gaga stole the show in a custom Valentino gown with dramatic puffed sleeves and a voluminous train that seemed to go on for miles. The periwinkle gown was perfectly complemented by Gaga's icy-blue locks and a Tiffany & Co. necklace that was dripping in diamonds. Even more impressive than Gaga's breathtaking ensemble is the way she glided up the stairs without tripping over her gown on her way to accept the award for Best Original Song for a Motion Picture.
Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt's 2019 Golden Globes look was practically perfect in every way — quite fitting for the woman who portrayed the most beloved nanny in all the world, Mary Poppins, to rave reviews. The OG Mary Poppins, legendary Julie Andrews, certainly left some big shoes for Blunt to fill (and an even bigger umbrella), but after seeing Mary Poppins Returns, it's nearly impossible to think of any actress better suited for the gig.
However, Blunt's red carpet look was definitely a far cry from anything Mary Poppins would have in her wardrobe, and we couldn't love it more if we tried. The star, who was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, graced the red carpet donning a sleeveless Alexander McQueen silver dress featuring a high-low hemline, intricate lace detailing and cut-outs, and an elegant high neckline. Blunt complemented the dress with simple diamond earrings and a barely-there, natural makeup look.
Alison Brie
Nominated for her portrayal of Ruth Wilder in the Netflix hit series, GLOW, Alison Brie was definitely glowing in her plunging Cinderella-inspired gown at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards. The Vera Wang baby-blue ball gown (complete with a sparkling exposed bandeau) was certainly worth the wait, but if you're a follower of Brie's on social media, you were likely checking out the star's sneak peeks via her Instagram stories leading up to the big event. As excited as we were to watch the Golden Globes, Brie's excitement to be attending the ceremony as a nominee was palpable.
While she didn't take home an award, nothing could stop this gal from having the time of her life. And in true Cinderella fashion, Brie's own Prince Charming — husband Dave Franco — was on-hand to adjust her flowing train as she struck a pose for photographers. This is Alison Brie's fairy tale, and we're all just living in it.
Julia Roberts
Remember the glorious time that was the early 2000s in which wearing jeans under your dress was super in style? Thankfully, we all have collectively upgraded our fashion sense a bit by now. However, if there's one person suited to bring back the pants and dress look in a big way, it would be no other than veteran actress and America's forever sweetheart, Julia Roberts.
While she definitely didn't wear flared denim jeans under a sundress on the red carpet, Roberts did mix business casual with formal elegance by wearing a Stella McCartney look that included black, tailored trousers paired with a one-shouldered, flowing, dress-like top. Roberts, who was nominated for role in Amazon Prime's drama Homecoming, accented her unique red carpet ensemble with dangling diamond drop earrings, a diamond cuff bracelet, and loose, wavy tresses.
This isn't the first time Roberts has mixed business with elegance. When she attended the Golden Globes in 2014, the star wore a black, strapless, figure-hugging evening gown paired with a collared white button-up underneath.
Lupita Nyong'o
Lupita Nyong'o has been slaying both on-screen and on the red carpet ever since she burst onto the scene after her unforgettable performance in 12 Years a Slave. Ever since she floated down the red carpet looking like a real-life fairy princess at the 2014 Academy Awards, Nyong'o has been a favorite of style critics everywhere for her effortless beauty and flawless sense of fashion. Of course, the 2019 Golden Globes were no exception.
Nyong'o, whose Blockbuster hit Black Panther was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama, turned heads on the red carpet not only for her dazzling dress, but for her conservative choice of footwear. The talented actress posed for photographers before the awards ceremony wearing a long, strapless Calvin Klein by Appointment gown in royal blue featuring shiny beaded accents reminiscent of 1920s flapper fashion. However, the real stars of Nyongo's outfit were the strappy Aldo platform sandals she paired with her gown. Nyong'o proudly showed them off on the red carpet, and why wouldn't she? Not only are they gorgeous — they're only $45! Hey, celebs love a good deal just as much as we do.
Claire Foy
Claire Foy may no longer be portraying Queen Elizabeth II on the popular Netflix historical drama, The Crown, but she's still a queen in our eyes. Nominated for her supporting role in the out-of-this-world Ryan Gosling drama, First Man, Foy caught eyes and turned heads as she walked the red carpet in a dazzling canary-yellow gown featuring a plunging neckline, beaded accents, and sparkling starburst designs throughout the skirt.
As you're sure to have noticed, this year's Golden Globes ceremony was considerably more colorful than that of 2018, where many stars wore all black in support of the ever-important Time's Up movement. Foy was one of those stars, sporting a sultry black pantsuit ensemble and classic red lip. Though she opted for a bold pop of color this year, Foy still made a point to accent her look with a Time's Up bracelet as a reminder of the work that's left to be done.
Constance Wu
Constance Wu is Hollywood's "It" girl right now, and for very good reason. In 2018, the actress starred in the most successful romantic comedy in the past decade, Crazy Rich Asians, a feel-good film featuring an all-star cast of Asian descent, which dominated the box office week after week upon its theatrical release — much like the Blockbuster hits Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. However, Crazy Rich Asians was much more than a fun rom-com — the film was a huge step forward in representation on the big screen, and proved that any audience can relate to a well-told, entertaining love story.
Wu made for the perfect lead in the movie as Rachel — we're already dubbing her Meg Ryan 2.0. We can't wait to see what she'll do next, and that includes which red carpet ensembles she'll dazzle us with during award ceremonies to come. For the 2019 Golden Globes, Wu opted for a Vera Wang-designed nude princess gown, accented with a burnt-orange sash belt and elegant diamond choker. All hail the new queen of romantic comedies!
Sandra Oh
Oh, Sandra Oh — how do we love thee? Let us count the ways, and the outfit changes. Co-hosting the 2019 Golden Globes with Andy Samberg, the former Grey's Anatomy star made history more than one time throughout the evening. Not only was she the first woman of Asian descent to host the awards ceremony, she was also the first woman of Asian descent to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV drama in 39 years (according to Vox, the last actress to win the award was Yoko Shimada in 1980 for her role in Shotgun).
Oh worked with stylist Elizabeth Saltzman to put together each of her stunning looks throughout the night, which included a white Versace gown on the red carpet, another Versace number in red during the first part of the ceremony, and a white and gold Stella McCartney dress while accepting the award for her role in Killing Eve. According to Saltzman, Oh was an absolute dream to work with. "I hope that when people see her fashion, they see that you can be strong, empowered, sophisticated, and fun," the stylist told People.
Regina King
Regina King definitely dazzled on the red carpet before the 2019 Golden Globe Awards ceremony, but as gorgeous as she looked, it was King's acceptance speech that truly solidified her as queen of our hearts and a force to be reckoned with.
King took home the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her powerful performance in If Beale Street Could Talk, which was undoubtedly a well-deserved win. And as she took to the stage to accept her award, King took full advantage of the platform to deliver a powerful speech on equality in the workplace, making a vow in front of her industry colleagues (and the world) to ensure that each project she produces in the future will be "50% women." Yes, Regina!
A real-life superwoman, King looked both beautiful and powerful in a rose-toned metallic gown by designer Alberta Ferretti, which perfectly flattered her figure and gave off some serious warrior princess vibes. We love a lady who wields her power for good — and looks like a million bucks while doing so.
