Why General Hospital's Spencer Absolutely Hates Dex
Ever since 1994, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) has been in charge of the Northeastern U.S. organized crime organization on "General Hospital." In 1995, Jason Quartermaine (Steve Burton) suffered brain damage causing permanent memory loss and, while forging a new life, he changed his name to Jason Morgan. Sonny took him in and didn't expect him to be like his old self as everyone else in Jason's life did. He soon became Sonny's enforcer and, over the years, not only protected the interests of the organization but also their family and friends.
Sadly, Jason was killed in Greece when a cave collapsed on him just after he had saved several lives, causing a vacuum in Sonny's business. When Sonny's son, Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell), believed his dad had turned his back on his family, he vowed to send him to prison. Michael hired ex-soldier Dex Heller (Evan Hofer) to secretly get into Sonny's organization and gather evidence to put him away. Dex took the job but would have several run-ins with Sonny's nephew, Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Chavez).
Spencer had grown up alongside his friends, Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) and Cameron Webber (William Lipton), who were dating. But when Dex started to become part of Josslyn's life, Spencer started getting angry that the mafia lieutenant was interfering in Joss and Cam's relationship. After Spencer's girlfriend, Esme Prince (Avery Pohl), shared a video online of Josslyn (now Eden McCoy) and Cam having sex, their relationship started crumbling.
Josslyn dumped Cameron for Dex
In July 2022, Josslyn witnessed Sonny and Dex beating up a photographer named Felty (Brian Norris) because he'd been giving drugs to Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson). Joss recorded the incident, but Dex talked her out of handing it over to the authorities. At that moment, sparks flew between Dex and Joss, and "GH" fans were on board for a potential romance.
They would cross paths several times after that. When Ava Jerome (Maura West) was attacked by the Hook serial killer, the two were nearby and worked together to save her life. Ava's daughter, Avery Jerome-Corinthos (Ava and Grace Scarola), had lost her bracelet when visiting her mother in the hospital, and a nearby Dex helped Josslyn successfully search a dumpster for it. Because Dex happened to be in the proximity of two more of the murders, Sonny suspected him of being the Hook and had him tortured. Fortunately, Michael and Joss convinced Sonny to stop. Later, Sonny and Michael both told Dex to stay away from Josslyn.
Despite being forbidden to see each other, the two couldn't deny their attraction. On New Year's Eve of 2023, Dex saved Joss' life on the Port Charles docks from the Hook. That night Joss wasn't able to find Cam to tell him she wanted to end things and, after the incident on the pier, emotions and adrenaline were running high for her and Dex, and they slept together.
Spencer would confront Dex any chance he got
Joss and Dex would continue their physical relationship, although they were afraid that Sonny would kill Dex if he found out about them. Eventually, more people started to realize they were together, including Spencer. Spencer developed an irrational hatred for Dex, blaming him for breaking up Joss and Cam. Things got out of hand when, at Kelly's diner, Spencer punched Dex. When Dex later got grazed by a bullet saving Sonny's life, the don had Dex stay with him for a short time, where Spencer was living as well. Spencer verbally attacked Dex, telling him that he was just one of Sonny's hired goons.
In May, Spencer and Dex were at the gym and had a confrontation in the steam room. Spencer claimed to know Josslyn better than Dex, who then reminded him that he doesn't know Joss as an adult. Spencer attacked Dex, who blocked him and gave him a black eye. Celeb Dirty Laundry speculated that there might be a deeper reason for Spencer's irrational hatred of Dex, other than the fact that he slept with Joss while she was still with Cam. And Celebrating the Soaps has further theorized that Dex is the long-lost son of Jason Morgan and Karen Wexler (Marie Wilson).
Whether any of these theories come true, fans are still left wondering what's truly fueling Spencer's animosity toward Dex.
