Why General Hospital's Spencer And Trina Are Being Compared To The Legendary Luke And Laura
"I know what the house of Cassadine can do to save this world from the famine and the disease and all the other wretched ills that have been plaguing it for so many years," were the words Victor Cassadine (then Thaao Penghlis) used to justify his family's use of an apparatus to control the weather back in 1981, on "General Hospital." Now, history is repeating itself as Victor (now Charles Shaughnessy) had revealed that before their original bizarre plot, he and his brother Mikkos Cassadine (John Colicos) had concocted a contingency plan if the weather machine scheme failed. During the original story, Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) and Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) pursued the bad guys and got unexpected help from Laura Webber (Genie Francis), who had stowed away on their boat.
The Haunted Star was the boat that those heroes were on originally, and now it's being used again by Victor. He's taken certain family members, including his grand-nephews Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Chavez) and his baby brother, Ace. Considering Victor's new plan involves saving the world by wiping out a majority of the Earth's human population, he's also captured Dr. Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) so she can concoct an inoculation for those on the boat.
What no one expected was that Spencer's girlfriend Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) had stowed away on the Haunted Star, much like Laura had done previously. She and Spencer may be the only ones who can stop Victor.
It's a race against time to save the Earth
On "General Hospital" in 1981, as the good guys were closing in on the Cassadine family in an attempt to thwart their insane plot for world domination, superspy Robert Scorpio had told Victor Cassadine, "Mikkos [Cassadine] has gone stark raving mad. He's a machine out to destroy the world." Now it's Victor who's seemingly lost his mind, thinking he's doing the world a favor because of the damage humanity has done to the environment. The Earth's population has doubled since the Cassadines' first attempt in 1981. Meanwhile, Trina Robinson has been able to sneak around the ship undetected, and while her cell phone has no service, she's discovered the communication room. Trina and Spencer hatched a scheme whereby he'll cause a distraction so she can get to the room and call for help.
Soaps have pointed out that Spencer and Trina are poised to be the next Luke and Laura. Their love story has grown over time, captivating the audience. And because they were dressed in formal attire after attending the Nurses' Ball, only to end up on the Haunted Star, so were their predecessors dressed up in the original story. And similarly, Spencer and Trina may be the world's only hope for salvation.
As the excitement, tension, and danger mount on "GH," fans are riveted to their seats, and so are we!
