The 'Faux Out' Is The Fake Blowout That Will Give You Volume With Just A Curling Iron
Big hair is in. We've all been steadily leaning into the once-popular '90s style of voluminous blowouts and giant curls. To get volume, celebrity hairstylist Harry Josh recommends switching out your regular shampoo and conditioner with volumizing options, as he told InStyle. He suggests using mousse when styling your hair and adding a root lifter to your regular routine too. Josh also, naturally, suggested blow-drying, but if you're worried about frying your locks, the latest trick to achieve the look may be just what you've been hoping for.
TikTok is full of ingenious life hacks that help you with everything from cutting down on cleaning time to making the best home-cooked pasta. But if you venture over to the beauty side of TikTok, colloquially known as BeautyTok, you'll find some great ideas for changing up your routine to achieve things like big, voluminous hair without the dreaded and often prohibitively expensive blow-dry. In fact, some users are even going viral for a style now coined a "faux-out" that replicates a good blow-out without the hassle, and we're so here for it.
How to achieve the faux out look at home
If the idea of blowing out your hair at home sends chills down your spine, this new method of achieving a healthy, voluminous look is exactly what you need. Hairstylist Raven Hurtado raves about the faux out method for her clients who want to freshen up a blowout without having to reach for their blow dryer, per PopSugar. It does require hot tools, however. You'll need a classic clip curling iron and duck clips to achieve the look.
And yet, mastering a curling iron is much easier than mastering a blow dryer. If you want to stay away from heat, you can also switch out the curling iron with velcro rollers. To start, divide your hair up into large sections, curling each section upwards with your iron and securing it with the duck clips while the hair still feels hot to the touch. Once you get through each section of your hair, let it sit until cool — give or take 20 minutes — before removing the clips.
Flip your hair over and brush through the curls with a paddle brush, finishing the look off with a holding spray.
The must-have products and tools to pull it off
The faux out is arguably much easier to achieve at home than the classic blowout, but it still requires a certain amount of work and specific products. You'll need a classic 1.5-inch curling iron to achieve that big-curled look that brushes out into a voluminous, professional blow-dry style. If you're hoping to make this your new go-to and want to splurge on a curling iron, consider the T3 Singlepass Curling Iron, which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also creates curls that last all day.
If you're on a budget, this one is a great, wallet-friendly option that has adjustable temperatures to suit a variety of hair types. When it comes to the clips you use to secure your curls, make sure they are duck-billed. That way, they'll help keep the hair in place without causing creases or indents. These clips from Dry Bar are a great salon-level option, but we also love these non-slip clips and these metal options too.
To keep the curls in place throughout the day, you'll also want to get a good finishing spray. The OUAI Texturizing Hair Spray is ideal for all hair types and is super lightweight so it won't make you feel sticky or weigh down your curls. The Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray is also a great option as it adds volume and will keep your curls in place even while you sleep.
