What Sophie Turner Looks Like Underneath All That Makeup
While she's best known for having played Sansa Stark in HBO's hit series, "Game of Thrones," Sophie Turner is also an iconic leader in the celebrity beauty scene. Much like her character, Turner has spent time building an influential public image and dedicated following that goes far beyond her time on set.
The English actor went from doing her own makeup for her first red carpet event to accepting all kinds of ambassadorships with legendary companies like Louis Vuitton (via Vogue). In October 2022, Sophie Turner made headlines for her trendy siren eye makeup at Paris' fashion week (via Popsugar). Naturally, all eyes are sure to be on her, wherever she goes.
Her flawless complexion and show-stopping looks have inspired a whole generation, but what's going on underneath the foundation? You may be surprised to learn how simple her skin care routine is, what her favorite products are, and how she feels about doing her own makeup these days.
She isn't always all dolled up
When she's not dazzling audiences with her own special version of the hottest new makeup trends, the "Do Revenge" actor boasts a naturally stunning visage. In 2019, back when she was engaged to Joe Jonas, the star grabbed a no-makeup selfie with her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Priyanka Chopra. In the picture, Turner is rocking a casual t-shirt and flying free with no makeup whatsoever, showing off radiant, flawless skin. And in a February 2021 image shared by her husband, you can see all of her freckles as she poses in a hoodie. He captioned it, "You have two moods and I love them both equally." We have to agree!
When it's time to hit the red carpet, Turner apparently prefers the help of an experienced makeup artist. In a 2020 interview with Vogue, she admitted, "I'm not very good at makeup ... I usually use my makeup artist, Georgie Eisdell, for events." As for what makeup she wears and when, she keeps it pretty consistent. "My daytime look and night-time look are quite similar: foundation, a touch of concealer, a little bit of eye shadow, and mascara," she said. "And then I just hope that I look okay!" Sounds easy enough!
She keeps her skin clear with a few key products
Don't be deceived! Just because Sophie Turner's skin looks perfect when the cameras come out (even with no makeup on), that doesn't mean it's a piece of cake behind the scenes. She's looking out for her skin every day, which takes a lot of time, money, and planning.
In an interview with Women's Health, she explained why sunscreen is a daily essential for her, saying, "This model I used to know, she used factor 50 sunscreen every day and just turned 30, and she has skin like a baby — it's just porcelain and amazing." If that doesn't motivate you to start using sunscreen ASAP, we don't know what will.
As far as skincare goes, she likes to keep things pretty simple due to her sensitive skin. In between filming sessions in 2020, she gave Vogue a rundown of her nightly routine: "I cleanse, apply an eye complex under my eyes, and then apply eye cream." On the whole, the "Game of Thrones" actor prefers to use products that cleanse, hydrate, and brighten her skin without irritating it or drying it out. This includes drugstore buys like micellar cleansing water, a rose facial toner, and Difesa sterile cream, which she first tried in Italy. The star also has a far less budget-friendly product in her skin care armory: La Mer moisturizer (via New Beauty).
She's rocking over a dozen tattoos
The "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" star has over a dozen small tattoos, many of which apparently have hidden meanings, according to Elle. To be fair, she was covered with heavy cloaks, costumes, and makeup during much of her screen time, so it's not surprising we may have missed a few (if not all) of these little Easter eggs. Many of the tattoos represent loved ones, some symbolize her biggest film roles (including two from "Game of Thrones"), and a few are just for fun!
Turner told Refinery29 that her favorite tattoo is the detailed triangle on her left arm, which is meant to represent the close relationship she has with her brothers. "It's three triangles, and it's Plato's theory that the soul is comprised into three parts: reason, spirit, and appetite," she explained. "Reason is my eldest brother James, spirit is my other brother Will, and I'm appetite. It means a lot to us, we've all got them. They're like my best friends in the world."
She likes to experiment with DIY beauty hacks
It turns out Sophie Turner takes inspiration from her sister-in-law, Priyanka Chopra, when it comes to trying new beauty hacks. In an interview with one of her stylists, Christian Wood, the actor said the best beauty tip she picked up from another celebrity was actually from Chopra's how-to videos. Turner referenced her sister-in-law's DIY scalp and face masks specifically, adding, "You've got to stimulate the follicles, you know?" Next time you mix up your own homemade face or hair mask, just remember, Sophie Turner loves these too!
Turner is very impulsive when it comes to making plans, which may be why she changes up her look on the regular (via Glamour). "I just like to ride the wave of life and see where it takes me, rather than setting a plan out for myself," she explained while speaking to Glamour. "It's more fun that way." From a fiery redhead with smokey eyes to a laid-back blonde with natural makeup, Turner continues to impress with a wide variety of looks — and she enjoys the experimentation!
She's struggled with body image insecurities like the rest of us
We're not the only ones who struggle with the pressures of social media beauty standards and body dysmorphia — not to mention internet trolls. Underneath all that makeup, Sophie Turner is a human being just like the rest of us. In May 2022, Turner admitted to Elle, "I have noticed that social media makes me incredibly anxious and it's something I try to distance myself from." She told the publication that she doesn't want her daughter to experience the same things she has. "I know what it can do to your mental health to be in this industry, and to be photographed every day and have the comments. It's not something I want her to deal with unless she says, 'This is what I want to do.'"
During the same interview, Turner described how she's struggled with body image issues and an eating disorder for some time. She said having a live-in therapist changed her perspective on everything and is helping her feel better about herself. "One night, I was playing over and over in my mind a comment I'd seen on Instagram. I was like, 'I'm so fat, I'm so undesirable,' and spinning out. She said to me, 'You know, no one actually cares. I know you think this, but nobody else is thinking it. You're not that important."
While that may sound harsh, this was exactly what Turner needed to hear. The actor has started to limit her time on social media, and she's already experienced benefits from doing so. Her best piece of advice for the rest of us? "Live real life — it's much more fun."
